Clarity

Ummm . . . hasn't anyone heard of spaces and paragraphs?!?!?! --72.226.200.76 01:03, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

This and the Sea of Monsters both look like they could use a complete look over.

I added a Cleanup tag. I'd clean it up myself, but I don't know the story, and the writing is vague enough that I'm not sure I could fix it without being more specific. Editors should look out for run-on sentences, in particular, but also for getting rid of information that is too detailed for plot summary. -kanmalachoa (66.168.21.199 05:57, 26 November 2006 (UTC))

Hello. I am quite obsessed with this particular series. If you all don't mind, I'll clean it up, and make sure there are actually paragraphs, spacing, make sure it doesn't look like it's been typed by a twelve year old, ect. I've already edited most of the Lightning Thief's page, I continually delete lies people put on the film part, and I plan to do this with all of these books. I can handle it. -Regards, Nicole

Rewrite?

I could rewrite this and make it a hundred times better. Not much deatail. Does anyone want to help me? Tatlolou (talk) 22:23, 8 January 2009 (UTC)tatlolou

Correction

Actually, Percy Jackson is trying to find Zeus' master lightning bolt (hence the name of the book) because Zeus believes Posideon, Percy's father, set Percy up to steal the bolt, forgetting the fact that Percy had not been claimed officially asa Posideon's son. He already discovered his father before he had even left Camp Half- Blood. But it's just a small matter, really. MS67722 (talk) 22:37, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Oversight?

In the article, the book is called a 2005 book, yet in the film adaptation section, it says the movie rights were aquired in 2004, a whole year earlier. Is this an oversight, or is this really what happened? The Dark Fiddler (talk) 01:23, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

well, Michael Crichton sold the rights to a Jurassic Park movie before the book was ever published, so this isnt too outrageous. confirmation is still needed, though —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.233.246.235 (talk) 07:18, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Rewrite Tag

I removed the rewrite tag. From what I can see, this article's in good shape. I also resubmitted them to be assessed by both Novels and Children's Literature..If anyone objects to that removal, let me know, but I think it's made a lot of progress since November, which is when it was added. Danielle Chuchran

I've been keeping my eye out, but I haven't been able to find a source which confirms that Danielle Chuchran will be playing Annabeth in the movie. People keep adding it to the article, but because it's not verifiable it can't be put in the article yet. "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth—that is, whether readers are able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether we think it is true" (WP:V). As requested on WikiProject Children's Literature, I have checked this article for assessment and agree with the current rating of B class. I do not feel able to offer any points for improvement; you may wish to nominate this as a Good Article to recieve more detailed feedback. Awards Section

Okay, clearly I have removed the wards section and have been asked to explain why. For one, it is disrupting for it to have it's own section. It would be much better if that info was merged into the reception section but in complete sentences instead of just listing them. And trying not to use one link about ten times too. Anyway, I will TRY to do this myself but at the time I'm multitasking on improving a multitude of projects. Thanks.--(User talk:Next-Genn-Gamer) 15:40, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

I see you removed the link to the Mark Twain Award from The Lightning Thief article. Please note that the wikilink to the wikipedia article on the award WAS the reference. A reader going to that wikipedia article will find a listing of all the past winners. In that article you will also find an external link to the Missouri Association of School Librarians unambiguously listing The Lightning Thief as the 2008 winner. Since you saw fit to remove that award I'm wondering why you didn't remove the other six unreferenced awards? I'll leave it to you to add it back, or give a valid justification as to why you removed that edit. --Quartermaster (talk) 13:50, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

I've sourced the award. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 02:45, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Translations and "over 34 languages"

I added a section listing translated editions of The Lightning Thief. In so doing, I couldn't find support for the fact that this specific title has been translated into 34 different languages. Though possibly true, the contention is not supported by my research or even by the citation itself which refers to the "series" and not a single book. A minor thing, but I removed the specific assertion of 34 languages and just changed it to "many" and continued to point to the original source cited; a reader can still access it and come to their own conclusions. Should an authoritative citation mentioning this specific title has been translated "34 times" then that should replace the one that is there.

Caveat: I'm betting that the "34 translations" meme might end up being repeated from this same originally cited source. --Quartermaster (talk) 16:23, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm thinking why don't we moved the "Foreign Translation" to the main PJ page, since other books' articles don't have this section, we can just move this to the main PJ page so it applies to all. --Mktsay123 (talk) 11:37, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Deluxe Edition Information???

How about we add the information of the Deluxe Edition that is going to be released? Not in a separate section of the article, maybe a note in the first paragraph or the section "Development and publication"? --Mktsay123 (talk) 14:40, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Typo in article's Plot section?

I'm not familiar with this book, but this sentence in the article's Plot section (as I post this) appears to be missing some informaton. As they approach the pit of Tartarus, Luke’s shoes try to pull Grover into it, but he manages to slip free his hooves. If someone can correct this, please note it it here as resolved. Thanks.5Q5 (talk) 16:34, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Where's the typo?-- iBendiscuss/contribsHow's my driving? 21:02, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
This doesn't read right, seems to be missing one or more words: "but he manages to slip free his hooves." 5Q5 (talk) 15:28, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

And THIS typo-charged sentence in the article's Plot section *definitely* needs correction, too: "Percy is then grantd Poseidon had broken his oath, believes Poseidon had Percy steal the bolt." What -- if anything -- does this mean? Even if you correct the spelling error in "grant[e]d," the rest makes no sense.72.224.51.104 (talk) 02:12, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Yes these are errors in grammar, but I believe something is missing plot-wise.... he kills the Minotaur, which is what dissolves into gold, no? Maybe This happened in a later book? My memory isn't that great but I recently read the 5th novel and it distinctly references the night "[Percy saved his] mother by slaying the Minotaur"

Old version of the wiki-summary....

Better yet I found some (grammatically horrible) chapter summaries that could be fine with some revision...also chapter four improtantly states that Percy kills the Minotaur (as I recalled)despite its horible grammar.... Also the wiki summary seems to be missing the part where Percy gets his mother back...... First she's int he underworld, next she's found him a new school WTF? .... anyway I'm not sure but either he trades a pearl (of the sea? of dreams? don't remember its name) for her, or Hades returns her in exchange for the helm... not sure which. Sshadowsslay (talk) 18:47, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Chapter 1: "I accidentally pulverize my pre-algebra teacher" He gets into trouble on a field trip. He puts Nancy,{ a bully}, into a fountain. She then drops her lunch into Grover's lap. They get into a fight, but Mrs. Dodds intervenes. Ms.Dodds then takes Percy into the Roman and Greek center where Ms.Dodds turns into this monster who has glowing eyes and wings, with long fingers. It tries to kill Percy but Mr. Brunner tosses a pen to Percy which turns into a golden sword that Mr. Brunner uses at class when he dresses up. It cuts Ms. Doddds on the shoulder. Then she turns into this yello powder. Percy Jackson kills Mrs. Dodds in the Museum on a field trip with a pen that turns into a sword, because she turned into an evil hag with wings and talons and tried to kill him because she knew he was special (half-blood).

Chapter 2: "Three Old Ladies Knit the Socks of Death" Percy and Grover saw three old ladies knitting socks by the side of the road, at a fruit stand, across a 4 lane highway, next to their broken down bus. Grover gets nervous that while Percy was looking at the ladies, they cut their yarn. He says, they never pass 6th grade, and he is a keeper, and is worried about Percy. On the bus Grover gave Percy his card just in case Percy needed it. By that time Percy had a lot of questions like: Why am I in danger?, Why did you give me your card?, What are you talking about?.

Chapter 3 : "Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants" While in thier little cabin they realize it is going to hurricane. When they were about to leave Grover was standing at the front door with "shag carpet pants on". They all get in the car and Percy's mom floors it. Then Percy realizes that Grover is half goat (saytr). Percy gets no answers as to what they are speeding away from. After a while Grover says they are speeding away from the "Lord of the dead and his bloodthirstiest minions". As they took a turn they got hit by a lightning bolt and slid off the road into the ditch, getting a slight view at the monster chasing them. Well Percy was in the car Percy's mom said "get out of the car and go to the tree" but Percy said "I'm not leaving you two behind" so Grover and Sally came.

Chapter 4: "My Mother Teaches Me Bullfighting" Percy was on his way to the summer camp and it was raining, and his mom knew that there was a bulky bull chasing him trying to kill him them a lightning bolt struck the car and the car was in a ditch. Grover was hurt and he was saying "Food" (guess he was hungry) Him and his mom carried Grover to the hill then Percy had to kill the bull with the pen that was a sword and killed the bull and took the horn from the bull. They arrived at the hill and they all went in exept his mom(she cant come in because she isn't a halph-blood

Chapter 5: "I Play Pinochle with a Horse" Percy gets treated to some TLC and "passes" the test by drinking ambrosia, otherwise know as nectar of the gods. If he were merely a mortal, it would have killed him, but since he was a half-blood, it healed him instead. He is introduced to a few new characters, Mr. D, Chiron, Annabeth, and many other members of Camp Half-Blood. He finds out Mr. Brunner is actually a centaur named Chiron. Mr. D is in charge of Camp Half-Blood, but really is there becuase he is being punished by Zeus for a past misdeed.

Chapter 6: "I Become Supreme Ruler of the Bathroom" Percy gets to know the Camp and fellow campers. He immediately gets picked on by Clarisse, a member of the Ares family. They get into it and Clarisse whoops on him until she tries to give him a swirly, then to her astonishment, she gets totally soaked by a toilet explosion. The only person not wet was Percy, coincidence?

Chapter 7: "My Dinner Goes Up in Smoke" The campers sit down to dinner and give the best part of it to the fire as an offering to the gods. Percy really wishes that he could figure out who his dad is. There is an image that is revealed which pretty much settles who his father is.

Chapter 8:" We Capture a Flag" Percy is on annabeths team for capture a flag and clarrise gets all "im gonna kill you!" and percy does a cool move and breaks her spear so Luke runs in and gets the flag but then Percy gets attacked by a hellhound and chiron jumps in and saves the day and percy's team wins. Percy was a bit mad that Annabeth used him as bait to get Clarisse out of position so her team could win, but gets over it.

Chapter 9:"I am Offered a Quest" Percy Jackson gets to go on a quest. He also has Annabeth and Grover too. Percy got sad because Annabeth and Grover got things from their dad’s but not Percy. Chiron, {Mr. Brunner} pulled Percy off to the side and told him that his father knows were you are. Chiron also gave him a pen that turned in to a golden sword. Chiron said that it’s from his father. Chiron told Percy that if it goes away it takes a couple of seconds for it to return to your pocket. They get a ride from Chiron’s driver that Chiron asked to do it.

Chapter 10:" I Ruin a Perfectly Good Bus" On their trip out west they are riding on a bus, when Percy realizes that Mrs. Dodds and two other ladies who are harpies are also on it. Percy dons Annabeth's invisibility cap, but the harpies make too much damage and the bus is pretty much totalled. Percy fights them off, but now they are on the run. This event is broadcast over the news, so now people think Percy is a terrorist or something.

Chapter 11: We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium"

Chapter 12: "We Get Advice from a Poodle" In this chapter Percy, Annabeth, and Grover are just at camp Half-Blood waiting for something special event to happen. Percy really wants to find his mom and be safe with his family (Mom). Percy talks with Grover and Annabeth about Percy’s mom. They agree to find her mom with Percy. They talk to a very smart poodle that tells them where and how to find Percy’s mom. They get on a plane going to Los Angeles, Califorina to find Percy‘s mom.

Chapter 13: " I Plunge to My Death" Percy, Grover, and Annabeth are going in to the arch, so they buy some tickets to go up in to the arch. Well they where in line they split up so Percy was alone. He got found by a laty that was not human. He got to the top then he jumped in to the water for about an hour, then came out. He was freacked when he saw he was on T.V. plunging to his death.

Chapter 14: "I Become a Known Fugitive" Well obviously he become a fugitive and thatnulls actually pretty exciting. Annabeth and Grover sneak out of the arch that is broken, people are saying that a boy of Percy's description and he has to sneak out of there it is very exciting.Unfortunately the chapter is short too so ,too bad.

Chapter 15: "A God Buys us Cheeseburgers" Ares comes to a diner in Denver and tells the kids that he has a deal for them. If they get his shield from a nearby waterpark, then he'll tell Percy about his Mom. The kids go to the waterpark, and they go into the pool to get the shield from a boat. Cupid statues start to come alive and shoot arrows that turn into a metal net. Percy uses his power to control water and saves them. It was a trap to catch Ares & Aphrodite messin' around. The kids were glad to have escaped without being put on Olympus tv.

Chapter 16: " We Take a Zebra to Vegas" The kids hop into the back of a semi-trailer of an animal rescue organization. It turns out all to be a farce, the animals are mistreated and miserable. Percy, Grover, and Annabeth hear their stories and help them, know that an evil is unacceptable. Their journey leads them to the Golden Lotus Casino, which has tons of fun stuff for kids to do, in fact, some kids never leave. Percy finally gets his head together and gets Grover and Annabeth to leave, but a few days have passed, where they thought they had been in there for only a few hours! The Summer Solstace is upon them!

Chapter 17: "We Shop for Water Beds" They are in L.A and have money, but they are running out of time. The police are over trying to find the three mysterious teens, so they live in alleys. This gang of rich kids are going to beat them up, so they run into the Waterbed shop. When they get there the salesmen is actually Percrustes a reptile like creature that wants to kill them. He traps Grover and Annebeth and Percy traps the evil reptile like creature and Percy cuts his head off. Percy kills yet another monster, the bad way.

Chapter 18: "Annabeth Does Obedience School"

Chapter 19: "We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of"

Chapter 20: "I Battle My Jerk Relative"

Teal tribe Chapter 20 Summary They had just returned from the underworld when they ran into Ares. They had a long discussion about how Percy was tricked and that Ares stole the Master Bolt and Helm. It soon turned into an argument. They were wildly taunting each other and soon, Percy uncapped his sword and Ares was just as fast. They engaged in dreadful battle and were soon getting tired. The cops came. The officer told them to drop their weapons but Ares sizzled their cars into a pulp. They kept fighting when Percy went into the surf. He slammed Ares with a massive amount of water. He was whitewashed and then he was slashed in the heel by Percy’s sword. A large amount of darkness came and time froze and color disappeared. Ares was now immortal and had a curse on Percy so that whenever he fought he would be bad. He was congratulated by Grover and Annabeth.

Chapter 21: "I Settle My Tab"

Chapter 22: "The Prophecy Comes True" Sshadowsslay (talk) 18:47, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Found this ctrl+c 'd on yahoo answers... It's an old version of the wiki summary, it's more in depth and seems to be better overall excecpting the fact that it has more grammatical errors... Maybe we should add a section entitled: Sshadowsslay (talk) 18:47, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

"In Depth Synopsis" ?

Percy Jackson is a twelve year old boy, diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia.[2] Because of this and other strange things he doesn't know the truth about, he has been kicked out of every school he has attended and tends to get in trouble with the law frequently.[2] While on a trip to a local beach cabin with his mother, his friend Grover is revealed to be a satyr and urgently tells Percy's mother that he must go to camp. As they are driving, their car is struck by lightning, and they are attacked by a Minotaur. The minotaur grabs Percy's mother, who dissolves into a gold shower of light, and then comes for Grover and Percy, who narrowly escape.[2] Percy wakes up later in a cabin while being fed ambrosia, the food of the gods, by Annabeth Chase. He later finds out that he has arrived in Camp Half Blood, a secretive training ground and year-round camp for "half bloods" (demigods, children of unions between mortals and the Twelve Olympians). Half bloods seem to have ADHD because they have inborn battle reflexes, and dyslexia because their brains are hard-wired to read in Greek.[2]

After he is introduced to the camp, Percy is moved into the cabin of Hermes under the care of Luke.[2] Hermes takes all newcomers until their Olympians parent claims them, which sometimes never happens. During a Capture the Flag game, Percy is attacked by Ares campers for making a fool of Clarisse. He heals when he steps into a river behind him, and is revealed as the son of Poseidon. Poseidon had broken an oath taken with Hades and Zeus after World War II that they would not have any more demigod children due to a prophecy mentioning that one of the next demigod children of Zeus, Poseidon or Hades would destroy or save Olympus. Percy then is granted a quest, to find Zeus' master bolt which was supposedly stolen by Hades. Because Zeus finds out that Poseidon has broken his oath, he believes Poseidon had Percy steal his Master Bolt. Percy has 10 days to find it before the summer solstice, accompanied by two friends, Annabeth and Grover.[2] Luke gives him winged shoes for the trip, but Percy lets Grover wear them instead.

They decide to reach the entrance to the Underworld, now in Los Angeles. As they travel west, they encounter the Chimera in the St. Louis Arch, a hotel of Lotus Eaters in Las Vegas, and others.[2] Near their destination, the war god Ares gives Percy and Annabeth new clothing and backpacks to replace their travel-worn clothes. As they approach the pit of Tartarus, the winged shoes try to pull in Grover, but he manages to slip his hooves free. Percy then confronts Hades, where he finds out that his mother was not actually killed, but taken hostage by Hades. Hades also believes Percy stole the Master Bolt, and indeed, it is now in Percy's backpack. He finds out that Ares had tricked him and he get out of the underworld leaving his mother. On the shore he fights Ares and wins by hurting the gods heel. He was given the hat of darkness he gives it back to Hades.

Although Percy is a child of Poseidon who has made Zeus angry already, he risks taking a plane to reach New York City, since Olympus is now located atop the Empire State Building. Zeus accepts the master bolt, but not before warning Percy he may never enter the sky again.

When Percy returns to camp he meets with Luke, who suddenly attacks. Luke reveals that he stole the Master Bolt for Kronos, the Titan father of the gods. He then calls out a poisonous scorpion and leaves, meanwhile Percy is stung and nearly dies. At the end of summer, Percy decides to attend another school found by his mother, although he's sure he'll be kicked out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sshadowsslay (talkcontribs) 18:10, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Umm...

"To bad that after page two of the book the movie runs off on it's own. If they had used the original story they may have made money. Don't bother to watch the new movie unless you have never read the books." This is in the "adaptation" summary. This is blatant bias, but it apparently has a source. Copyedit

Hi

During the copyedit a small matter arose that may need attention:

  • "The Lightning Thief has sold over 275,000 copies in both paperback and hardcover formats". Strangely the previous text says "The book has sold over 1.2 million copies in the subsequent four years"

Chaosdruid (talk) 23:35, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

I have removed the latter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Winner 42 (talkcontribs) 14:34, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

I have done some work on the existing plot summary. This has been to correct spelling and fix typos and grammar. I think the plot summary needs to be tightened up, as it assumes knowledge of the book. I'm happy to edit/help anyone who would like to do this. Here in NZ, the book is called Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, not just The Lightning Thief. I think UK has the same name as NZ. Should we mention this in the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alec scheat (talkcontribs) 10:40, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

I think the original US title was "The Lightning Thief" and that as the series became more popular and better known, "Percy Jackson" was added to the title. I have not verified this, but I think that it is worth checking, for the sake of publication history. I think this a good book for children to read because it teaches you about the Greek Gods and its fun. I'm enjoying it in class and I HATE reading. I think once I finish this one I will get the other ones! Proxxt (talk) 12:34, 12 August 2010 (UTC)proxxt

NO mention for the Nintendo game? It consists of a series of battles along a labyrinthine path with plot advancing sequels for some path nodes. Characters are cameoed for dialogs and 3D animated for battles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.33.30.50 (talk) 07:30, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
