Observation: Some sources say that the books take place half a million years in the future, while others say ten million. There aren't really any indications in the book itself, except that it's over 50000 years after the end of the Era of the Fourth Mental Structure (the present day being the Third). That should probably be mentioned in the article at some point; I'm just too lazy to do it myself. --DocumentN (talk) 06:02, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, chapter 3, section 10 makes reference to the Fifth Mental Structure recording over 80000 years. That still doesn't give any indication of how long the Fifth and Sixth Mental Structures lasted, or how long since the Seventh started, though, but it's another data point. In the Allusions section, I feel part of Adkins character is similar to the story popular in moral philosophy classes where a village can enjoy all the wealth and good fortune they can have if they only subject one of their fellow villagers to live in squalor for their entire life.
