Tagline

[edit]

What does the film's tagline mean? Maybe it would be helpful if it was mentioned in the trivia section because I think a lot of people would wonder the same thing. Freida3000 16:06, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are two phrases on the promotional poster - are you referring to the one about Doyle or the one about good timing? 65.96.190.159 04:54, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm referring to the one about good timing. Freida3001 02:55, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Car

[edit]

The article lists the car Hackman drove during the chase as a Chevrolet; it'a actually a Pontiac Tempest. Adambomb1701 05:34, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Backwards Picture

[edit]

The first picture that is in the "Plot" section with Hackman eating the pizza is backwards. In the movie he is to the left of his partner, not to the right, as is shown in the picture in the Wiki article. It needs to be reversed. Zeno333 07:43, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Gene e3w1.jpg

[edit]

Image:Gene e3w1.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Jetty Lane 500 ?

[edit]

When Popeye Doyle, dressed as Santa, asked a kid what he wanted for Christmas, he said he wanted "Jetty Lane 500". What's that ? StuRat (talk) 00:19, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is a Jetty Lane in Houston, Texas, and another in Warrnambool, Australia, but neither seems include 500 as the street address. StuRat (talk) 17:52, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The kid is obviously asking for some kind of toy. I'm completely mystified as to why you'd think it would be a reference to a street address in Houston or Warrnambool. Postdlf (talk) 18:07, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Because I did a Google search and found no such toy. I was also a kid at that time in the US so would likely recall such a toy. The Google search did find those addresses, and Jetty Lane sounds a lot more like an address than a toy, anyway. It's not unusual for movie directors to insert references to things in their personal lives. StuRat (talk) 18:43, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As I understood, the kid wants a Johnny Lightning, which is a toy car much like todays Hotwheels ... 37.157.153.102 (talk) 17:40, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Picking your feet in Poughkeepsie ?

[edit]

Doyle several times says things like this. Is this some kind of inside joke ? StuRat (talk) 00:22, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a nonsense phrase Doyle uses to throw suspects off their guard while he questions them. Every time I go to Poughkeepsie I think of it. But I still haven't picked my feet there. Postdlf (talk) 02:36, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see, I was thiking he had some kind of foot hygeine obsession. StuRat (talk) 17:23, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Picking anything in Poughkeepsie, from a criminal's point of view, would be spending time in the correctional facility on Rte 84??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.14.61.200 (talk) 05:20, 10 February 2015 (UTC) Hey... wasn't it " picking your toes "??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.14.61.200 (talk) 05:39, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The image Image:French22.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

"makes" Doyle

[edit]

What does it mean to "make" a person? I have never heard this phrase before. 174.3.186.15 (talk) 07:52, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It means he recognised Doyle was a policeman. Halmyre (talk) 06:49, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Popeeye's chicken

[edit]

I read in a book, one on nutritional food (at a friends house, not my book!), that popeye's chicken got its name from the movie's character. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sammy1339 (talkcontribs) 01:46, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No way

[edit]

"Put the car back together"?? That seems unlikely, based on what the cops did to it, and there is nothing in the movie to support that contention. As the officer tells Devereaux, they get hundreds of cars a day in the garage. It seems more likely that they replaced the car with another of like model and color, figuring that Devereaux had probably never seen the car before and wouldn't notice any subtle differences. Unless someone has a reasonable argument against, I'm going to modify this section. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.103.23.188 (talk) 20:15, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No comments so far, so I made the change. I wrote it to include both possibilities so the viewer can decide for himself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.103.23.188 (talk) 16:25, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Seemingly untouched," I like that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.103.23.188 (talk) 16:29, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent Article.

[edit]

Only two things that you did not include are 1)that because the movie went about $300K over budget, Richard Zanuck and David Brown were fired by the 20th Century Fox Board of Directors; and 2)Don Ellis's musical score really helped make that movie great. Still an excellent article.User:JCHeverly 19:33, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Academy Awards?

[edit]

How many other pictures have won five Academy Awards or more??? At age 30, is Bill Friedkin the youngest director to have won the Academy Award???User:JCHeverly 16:51, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of Punishment in Comparison to Actual People

[edit]

I have no idea what this line is meant to mean: "the director credits a general lack of punishment to Jehan's military service with Charles de Gaulle." 222.254.179.57 (talk) 07:06, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the statement as a citation had been requested over a year ago but none had yet been provided. DonIago (talk) 13:49, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ridgewood shoot

[edit]

Quite a commotion when we heard they were shooting a movie scene in our neighborhood. Lots of my friends went to watch and even tried to get into a scene but were disappointed. They did say that a car was wrecked so they went to Meyer Chevrolet (Fresh Pond Rd and Metropolitan Ave) and got another. The scene was of the car screaming around the corner of Forest Ave onto Putnam (about a 5 second clip). Who'd have thunk it would end up such a historic blockbuster. John from Ridgewood. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.14.61.200 (talk) 05:14, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Box office ?

[edit]

According to the sources used in the article the domestic Box office for the movies was $51 million. But according to The Numbers it was only $41 millions and it's listed as the 4th Top Grossing Movies of 1971 [1]. Another source says that it was second most top grossing: "With 5 Oscar wins and second place at the box office that year, William Friedkin’s The French Connection paved the way for that trend by turning the classic cops-chasing-criminals movie genre on its head with innovation and style."[2] What figure is most likely right ?--Ezzex (talk) 01:15, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Censorship (deletion of two ethnic slurs)

[edit]

In early June 2023, a number of websites, including Breitbart, independent.co.uk, and reddit, reported that the streaming version of the film at The Criterion Collection had been censored with little or no notice.

A summary is at https://hollywood-elsewhere.com/french-connection-refresher/

This appears to be a developing story. Dhdiv (talk) 22:56, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Dhdiv (talk) 05:00, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's being much more widely covered now. There's a new editorial in The Atlantic against the censorship of the film. A Google search of French Connection brings up numerous articles about the film's censorship at reputable news websites and film websites. This is a major event in the film's history and ought to be mentioned at Wikipedia. Jamesluckard (talk) 10:34, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Charnier "makes" Popeye
