Low importance?

Perhaps this article deserves more attention. This pass and the bridge over it essentially isolates Switzerland from the south. Trade with the Po valley was impossible until there was a reliable bridge. Battles were fought here. The fact that this bridge provides a vital link with the outside world is demonstrated by the succession of bridges, leading to the massive Gottard Base tunnel project which is now nearing completion after 10 years.
