Defensive Cribbage
[edit]FWIW, Trueblood was once supposed to guide a hunting/fishing party in the north woods and write it up for Field and Stream, but they ended up getting snowed in, or at least that was the "narrative hook." To meet his deadline, Trueblood wrote a column on the importance of a defensive discarding strategy in the game of cribbage--the absolute priority of not giving the opponent anything he/she can use in the 'crib,' no matter what damage you do to your own count. That column must have appeared in the 1950s or 1960s, but it was internalized by three generations of avid cribbage players in my family. Sorry to hear how he met his end.
