Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on May 26, 2010.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the Vilar Technology Center at Washington & Jefferson College was renamed the Technology Center, after its namesake reneged on a $18.1 million pledge to the college?
Current status: Good article

Name of this article

[edit]

I have placed this article at the Technology Center name. According to the official College Style Guide from 2005, the only two buildings where the "The" is an official part of the name are The Commons and The Burnett Center. However, this style guide is clearly outdated, since it refers to Vilar Technology Center, which clearly isn't the building's proper name. So, until there is an updated style guide that says otherwise, this should probably stay at Technology Center rather than The Technology Center. --GrapedApe (talk) 04:38, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • (By the way, if anyone cares, I think it should be named the Moffat Technology Center, after the W&J's greatest president, James D. Moffat, who was twice supposed to be honored by having a building named after him, but neither came to fruition.)--GrapedApe (talk) 04:42, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Move article

[edit]

I'm assuming that Technology Center has more than one use. This article should be moved to Technology Center (Washington & Jefferson College) -- Esemono (talk) 11:04, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • There are no other buildings with the name of Technology Center. If some are found, then we can have this discussion. Why would we create a disambiguation page that has 1 link?--GrapedApe (talk) 14:04, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support renaming. As I wrote at DYK, there must be thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, of places called Technology Center or Centre across the globe. (In fact, Technology Centre produces 20,656 hits on the en-wiki search engine.) Having this page in place stops the search engine finding anything except this page whenever someone tries to search for mentions of technology center, which is embarrassingly US-centric. Espresso Addict (talk) 23:18, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Disambiguation is for resolving conflicts in article titles, of which there are none. Adding a DAB term makes no sense, since there are no other pages with this title. Preferring that the "Go button" produce search results, rather than this properly-titled, page isn't a reason. Do you think that people who are attempting to search for 'Technology Center" are unable to click the "Search" button, rather than the "Go" button? If anyone feels so strongly about it, I suggest bringing it up at Wikipedia:Requested moves. --GrapedApe (talk) 01:06, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Technology CenterTechnology Center (Washington & Jefferson College) — There are many thousands of Technology Centers worldwide; the top level page should be a disambiguation reflecting this fact. See existing discussion on talk page Espresso Addict (talk) 01:47, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Survey

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.
  • WP:UNDUE is about the content of articles, not the title of articles, so citing it in this discussion makes no sense. Sure, the name of the building is stupid, but that's its name, so that should be the title of the article. I really doubt anyone looking for "Beaver Technology Center" will mistakenly type in "Technology Center." --GrapedApe (talk) 05:46, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support its only a matter of time before another "Technology Center" is added to Wikipedia. Change the name now before someone has to change the name linking to this article latter. -- Esemono (talk) 09:34, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose unless there are existing Wikipedia articles whose primary name is "Technology Center". There doesn't even seem to be a disambiguation page in existence so presumably these others are not significant enough to merit their own individual articles. Disambiguation should only be used when there are multiple articles of the same name. --Polaron | Talk 14:56, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, the disambiguation page lists only a few of the Technology Center article on Wikipedia. To argue that this one is the primary use is an error in my opinion. Move as nominated, update the template that uses this phrase and then move the dab page to the main title. I'll also note that this is about a building and not the topic of technology center, all the more reason why it should be moved. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:04, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per User:Vegaswikian - isn't necessarily the primary use. Regards, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 19:49, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • But, it IS the primary use. There is nothing else with this title. --GrapedApe (talk) 01:13, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • But you might be true if the building was the primary use. The general term is and you seem to not be accepting that fact. People who what to know what a technology center is should not wind up being sent to a building. Redirects should not cause a reader to be surprised or confused. Vegaswikian (talk) 16:45, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
        • Except that there is no such thing as a "technology center." There are merely buildings that have the words "Technology Center" in their names. Of those, this is a building that was formerly called the Vilar Technology Center, but the word Vilar was stricken. The description at the DAB page of "is a facility used for technology research" is almost a tautology. I'd like to see a source for that. A "technology center" surely can't be similar to a science center, which is a type of museum, nor can it be a Research park, which has specific academic connotations. Might I also point out that prior to writing this page, there was no entry for technology center, indicating that there is no such thing as a "technology center," merely buildings with similar names. No one is going to be shocked by arriving at this page, because no one, other than those looking for this page, is going to be searching for "technology center."--GrapedApe (talk) 17:39, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Compromise solution?

[edit]

What about placing the disambiguation page at Technology center (the lowercase usage, but Wikimedia software forces capitalization of all first letters of titles), with this article located at Technology Center (proper noun usage), with a hatnote saying something like "This is about an academic building, for other uses see Technology center." This would mitigate the chances of someone searching for "technology center" arriving at this page. This would appear to satisfy everyone's concerns.--GrapedApe (talk) 23:48, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer: Wizardman Operation Big Bear 19:21, 8 August 2010 (UTC) Overall this article is good, however I have a few concerns:[reply]

  • "Institutional funding came from the Eden Hall Foundation.[19] The Hillman Foundation provided $150,000 for the building." These two could be combined, and a bit of info on what the Revolutionary campaign and Hall foundations are would be nice, since there's no link for those. I don't have any information on the Eden Hall Foundation, except that it's a charitable foundation.-_GrapedApe (talk) 21:21, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Sentences combined. I don't have any information on the "Revolutionary" campaign, other than it was a campaign to raise money for the school.
  • "The first classes were held in fall 2003" seems a bit iffy putting it right at the end. I'd probably move it to the leadership section and slightly rewrite it.

Those are the only two things I found. It's fairly short, but there's not gonna be all that much on a college building. I'll put it on hold and pass when the issues are fixed. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 19:21, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good, so I'll pass the article. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 03:49, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
