While it states "In seasons where local derby matches were traditionally held on the same weekend, (including at New Year), the Dundee derby would take precedence if all three clubs were in the same league" this was not always the case. I well remember in 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 when all three big Tayside clubs were in the old Premier Division at New Year Dundee United played St Johnstone and Dundee played Aberdeen. The Dundee derby was in these seasons not scheduled in the same rounds of matches as the Old Firm and Edinburgh derbies. My understanding was that this was traditional dating back to the period either side of World War Two when Dundee were usually in the First (or A) Division along with Aberdeen while St Johnstone and Dundee United were in the second tier - this was certainly stated by older fans at that time. Thanks, best way might be to check the dates of past fixtures (United have a good archive site which should show it) and amend the wording reflecting what it shows - or remove the bit altogether if it's demonstrably wrong over a long period. Crowsus (talk) 09:28, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. A quick check shows that in 1992-93 all 3 were in the Premier Division and on 2nd Jan 1993 (when the New Year fixtures were played that year) Dundee United lost 2-1 at home to St Johnstone and Dundee drew away with Aberdeen. There do not seem to have been any New Year matches involving the teams on New Year 1994, possibly matches were cancelled due to weather and rescheduled as Dundeee United played St Johnstone later in January in a midweek match and Dundee and Aberdeen also had a midweek match later in January. Going back to New Year's Day 1963 Aberdeen beat Dundee 1-0 at home while Dundee United Played Queen of the South (St Johnstone were in a lower division that year). In 1967 Dundee United beat St Johnstone on 2 Jan and Dundee lost to Aberdeen, so it does look like this did not just happen in the 1990s. I will investigate further.
