Booker Reference

[edit]

There is something wrong with the Booker reference, since the 1st edition was published in 1967, and the 2nd in 1971, whereas it says 1967 (2nd ed.). I don't have either. Can anyone fix it? Also, the ref to the (Napoleonic) war being over 3 years before the canal was finished doesn't make much sense, since most of the canal was completed by 1809, and the wikipedia article on the Napoleonic Wars says they ran from 1803 to 1815, and the rumour only says that most of the canal was built by POWs. The claim is made on the Devon County Council local history page, but this shouldn't be accepted without qualification. Booker writes: ... "Fourteen years of continuous labour started on 29 August 1803. The tunnel’s course was marked out over Morwell Down by a line of white posts [etc, etc]. ... The yearly reports of the committee of management supervising the work provide a vivid and arresting narrative of the hard struggle to build the canal, but they offer no evidence for the persistent and picturesque legend that it was done by French prisoners of war." This is slightly ambiguous: he starts off about the tunnel, in more detail that I have included in the quote, but later in the same paragraph offers just one use of "canal".
He continues: "I can find no convincing evidence to support the story about French prisoners of war. To bring them from Princetown, which was not used until 1806, would have meant a march of two hours or more each way. ... By the time the tunnel was completed the Napoleonic Wars had been over three years."
I wanted to specify the edition I used, in case anybody checked on Google Books [1]; they digitized a different edition from mine and the page number isn't the same. No objection if this is rv to 1967 1971. --Old Moonraker (talk) 14:00, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Intriguing! The wikipedia article on Princetown says it was not started until 1806, and was not completed until 1809, by which time canal construction was also complete, although the tunnel was not. The tunnel took so long because of its small size, and thus few men could work on it. It seems unlikely that POWs were kept at Princetown before it was completed, so the two hour march seems unlikely. I am quite happy with the text as it stands, but find this sort of thing fascinating. (I have also changed the year to 1971 on the book). Bob1960evens (talk) 17:19, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Weir Head

[edit]

Weir Head, a mile or so upstream from Morwellham Quay, was the highest navigable point. Steamers used to reverse into the lock of the Tamar Manure Canal to turn for the trip downstream. Needs a rummage through my shelves to find the ref, then I'll add this, perhaps at River Tamar. Suggestions as to wording (there was only ever one edition of this work!) welcome. --Old Moonraker (talk) 17:19, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OS grid SX 435708. The line is visible on Google Earth, just to the east of "Bealswood Road".--Old Moonraker (talk) 17:40, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the picture identifying the location. Dust blown off some references and an edit to River Tamar page to follow when I get time. --Old Moonraker (talk) 14:32, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done. --Old Moonraker (talk) 11:18, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
