Disambig
[edit]I don't see why this is unique and why this can't be a disambig (see also Bashkir, Kalmyk, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, etc.). The shaky argument "hundreds of links broken" does not impress me very much. Have you just checked all of them or what?--Lüboslóv Yęzýkin (talk) 22:24, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
- That's not an argument, its a fact. There are hundreds of pages containing wikilinks to this redirect. If you change it to a disambiguation page, all those links become links to a disambiguation page, hence fairly useless and someone has to fix them all. That should be done before this page is altered, not afterwards, and definitely not left dangling for someone to come along and fix later or never. The simpler solution in these cases, if there really is occasional confusion over which Tatar readers were expecting, is to put a hatnote on the redirect target (eg. Tatars). It is perfectly acceptable for a slightly ambiguous title which the vast majority of readers would expect to cover one particular subject (a primary topic in WP parlance) to redirect directly to that topic. Then, an explicit disambiguation page (eg. Tatar (disambiguation) can be provided to list other rarer subjects. I just added a hatnote to Tatars, partially as an example, but also because it is probably useful. Lithopsian (talk) 11:18, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
- If they link here, for whatever the reason, a lot of them must be definetly wrong. I've checked several and they link here in the context of the Tatar invasion or the more recent events of the 15th and the following centuries (Cossacks, history of Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, etc.). What do the modern Tatars of Kazan have to do with all of that? Nothing. Yes, you're right those pages must be fixed, even if they are thousands. Or better to make this page a disambiguation page (or redirect to Tatar (disambiguation), if it already exists). If you leave this page as is you just lead the readers astray and create hundreds of confusions. This is simply wrong when an article about an Afghanistan province leads to the Tatars of Kazan! --Lüboslóv Yęzýkin (talk) 15:48, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
