"Tarnhelm" spell
[edit]The wikipedia article Nacht und Nebel says, "German for 'Night and Fog' (a direct reference to a 'Tarnhelm' spell, from Wagner's Rheingold)". Could someone with knowledge state what spell this is, what it does, and where it appears in the Reingold? Nick Beeson (talk) 13:14, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
That's THE Tarnhelm, to you
[edit]I'm changing the lede to "The Tarnhelm is ...". In Siegfried, Alberich and the Forest Bird both use the definite article to refer to it. So does Mime ("Wer schuf den Tarnhelm, der die Gestalten tauscht?") although he also calls it "my Tarnhelm" ("Um meines Tarnhelms lustigen Tand tausch’ ich ihn dir;") but that's fully compatible with thinking of it as "The Tarnhelm", not "Tarnhelm", as a sailor might sing "My North Star will guild me safely home through the turbulent waves over the lurking reefs," and also call the North Star "The North Star", not just "North Star", in ordinary speech. Also, Mime forged the Tarnhelm himself, so he naturally refers to it in affectionate terms. In Götterdämmerung, Hagen, Gunther, and Siegfried all consistantly use the definite article. If anyone objects, let me know! HandsomeMrToad (talk) 19:26, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
