Eugenie Grosup
Eugenie Grosup

Created by Whispyhistory (talk) and Philafrenzy (talk). Nominated by Whispyhistory (talk) at 13:05, 21 October 2023 (UTC). Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Tara Devi of Kapurthala; consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.[reply]

  • Source checks fine (once Google Translated), created (just!) within the window and long enough. QPQ done. No obvious issues with the article itself, including plagiarism and copyvio. However, the hook is full of unintroduced/unexplained words, people and thinks likely to be unfamiliar to many or most readers, especially those without native English: Maharajah, Anitra, Peer Gynt and Burgtheater: individually, none of these would be a problem, but the cumulative effect of so many in the same place is likely to make the hook opaque to a lot of its potential audience. Could you suggest some alts, perhaps? UndercoverClassicist T·C 11:07, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @UndercoverClassicist:... I don't know. Philafrenzy can you help please? Whispyhistory (talk) 19:56, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ALT1 ... that Czech actress Eugenie Grosup (pictured) married an Indian Maharajah after he saw her in an Ibsen play in Vienna? (caption on pic will need to be changed if this one is used) Philafrenzy (talk) 21:57, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Whispyhistory (talk) 03:24, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Approved. I like ALT1: have taken the liberty of changing the caption. UndercoverClassicist T·C 07:53, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Whispyhistory, UndercoverClassicist, and Vaticidalprophet: unless Google Translate deceives me (entirely possible), the cited source says that they didn't meet until 1936, and her two performances were in 1935. So, he didn't see her in the play, he just read about her in the press. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 23:38, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ALT2...an Indian Maharajah asked Eugenie Grosup (pictured) to marry him after she received a deportation notice to leave India and return to Nazi-occupied Europe?

The 1936 meeting is memoir from Pistol... can't pinpoint it at moment. Whispyhistory (talk) 00:07, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good spot, Leeky. The source is pretty clear that he saw her in something, because he sent her roses; what's the source for AL2? UndercoverClassicist T·C 07:32, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Source for ALT2 is page 177 in "Singh, H. H. Sukhjit; Frederick, Cynthia Meera (2019). "The Elysee Palace". Prince, Patron and Patriarch; Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala. New Delhi: Roli Books. ISBN 9788193860854." Whispyhistory (talk) 07:36, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to AGF that; suggest linking Maharaja, Nazi-occupied Europe and perhaps deportation. UndercoverClassicist T·C 08:52, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Theleekycauldron: I'm happy here if you are? UndercoverClassicist T·C 13:57, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nihil obstat on the A of GF, yeah :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 19:26, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Approved ALT2 in that case: appreciate the Latin, too. UndercoverClassicist T·C 20:39, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
