[edit]I think the biography should be adjusted, since the text is taken almost verbatim from another website (as even indicated in the article!) (131.211.109.68 (talk) 18:47, 26 March 2009 (UTC))
I'm wanting to begin a little conversation and dialogue in regards to Talal Asad. Philo 3400. — Preceding unsigned comment added by San Pedroo (talk • contribs) 21:00, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
I don't think the faculty page is an academic source. Maybe you can find more information in the philosophy encyclopedias. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jnbreukers (talk • contribs) 22:21, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
Birth year
[edit]Is it 1932 (as in the text) or 1933 (as in the categories, "1933 births")? 195.187.108.4 (talk) 11:27, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
Some (maybe) incorrect information
[edit]1) The article refers to his wife's name as being "Tanya Asad" and the PhD Thesis corroborates this, but page 11-12 of Hussein Agrama's Questioning Secularism refers to her as "Tanya Baker". They seem to be the same person, but the surname is different.
2) Under the "Formations of the Secular" section, the September 11 attackds are mentioned directly as being part of what propelled Asad to write that book, but he himself has said "Virtually everything except the introduction was written before 9/11, including the Egypt chapter." (Google the quote for a reference in Powers of the Secular Modern.)
3) The categories list him as a Muslim, but it's not clear if he views himself as one. He says "my loss of faith" in https://read.dukeupress.edu/the-minnesota-review/article/2011/77/87-100/67732, but later speaks about tsaking part in Islamic rituals at https://www.academia.edu/36002570/Interview_with_Talal_Asad .
"She would always leave instructions in Jeddah for me to perform ‘ umra before I came to her, so I did, dutifully. So I have done about ten of them or so. (One of these days I would like to go for Hajj, in shā’ allāh, with some friends of mine.)"
I'm only suggesting the category may be incorrect (although he may have returned to Islam after his initial loss of faith). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.6.116.247 (talk) 14:24, 17 July 2019 (UTC)
Cantwell-Smith as an influence
[edit]I know Talal has talked about William Cantwell Smith as being a key figure in the anthropology of religion. Does anyone have any sources explicitly stating WCS as an influence? Yr Enw (talk) 12:15, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
