Population Progression section

[edit]

I removed the Population Progression section, since it showed the population of the Municipality of Tórshavn, and not the Town of Tórshavn. Mulder1982 17:07, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Twinnings

[edit]

I can't find any hint on the official homepage of Tórshavn, that any of the mentioned cities in the article where twinnings of Tórshavn. Actually, they are Reykjavík and Nuuk, plus Aberdeen and Stavanger as cooperation cities. Additionally, Tórshavn is within the network of Nordic capitals (Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki, Mariehamn, Nuuk, Reykjavík). The photos marked "Vestaravág" and "Eystaravág" are of the same place, is this right? EJBH (talk) 01:01, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but that´s not how it should be. That should be fixed.--SigurdX (talk) 20:26, 4 March 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by SigurdX (talkcontribs) 20:19, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WPCities importance rating

[edit]

I changed this from "top" to "high". "Top" is reserved for "national capitals" (where nation is taken to mean a separate international state). The Faroes are described as an autonomous part of Denmark, so Thorshavn justifies "high" as it is the local capital. This is similar to Edinburgh and US state capitals. [edit]

I created a media gallery at Tórshavn/Media to round up, organize and pick media that can be used for the article. Please feel free to upload to the gallery, but please respect the goal of the gallery and WP:AGF. --OrbitOne 18:24, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

If anyone knows enough to write something about the houses in the historical district in Tórshavn, there are a few pictures to help illustrate.

Name

[edit]

We really need a source for the claim that Tórshavn could be named after a person, since people were never named after gods during the Viking Age as this would be considered blasphemy. --Thathánka Íyotake (talk) 16:43, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see no reason to think that it would have been named for anything other than Thor, since it was founded in 850 and the Norse were still overwhelmingly pagan at that time. Names with "Thórr" as part of a given name were in fact common later in the Viking age, but not "Tór" or "Thór" by itself, and not by 850. Jsc1973 (talk) 05:06, 14 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

B-class assessment

[edit]

Criteria

[edit]
  1. Suitably referenced: Red XN - Article has 12 references, many of which are to the root of corresponding sites. Ideally, these need narrowing down to direct sources, with English translations of titles, and then further sources adding in. Personally, I'd hope for at least 25-30 for an article of this length.
  2. Reasonable coverage: Green tickY - 'History' section provides a good basic overview of the city's development, and a number of other sections provide additional specific detail on climate and governance of the city, and transport, sport and music within the city.
  3. Defined structure: Green tickY - Article has all expected sections, detailing history, climate, politics, and culture of the city.
  4. Well-written: Green tickY - Article has good spelling and grammar throughout.
  5. Supporting materials: Green tickY - Article is well-illustrated and accompanied by maps and climate data.
  6. Appropriately understandable: Green tickY - Article explains well the history and features of the city, in a way understandable to someone who has never been there, and who is unfamiliar with the history of the Faroe Islands.

Recommendations

[edit]
Expand: 'History', 'Politics and government', and 'Music' sections, expand on 'pirate attacks' mentioned in '1500-1800' section (as previously tagged by another editor)
Add: 'Economy', 'Geography' (to include existing 'Climate' section), and 'Demographics' sections (see Copenhagen and London's pages for suggestion)
Reference: Particular focus on 'History' section, but 'climate', 'music', and 'transport' sections require citation, and additional citations elsewhere are always welcome.

I hope the above helps. Please let me know if I can help. — Sasuke Sarutobi (talk) 13:07, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
