Civil parish
[edit]The original article didn't make clear the fact that the TOWN of Swanley is actually a civil parish and includes other settlements, including Swanley Village , which deserves its own article. It is two separate places. Peter Shearan 07:33, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

History of Swanley
[edit]This Wiki is inaccurate. I can't be arsed to change all of the mistakes in the text, but will point out the following:
Swanley is not mentioned in Domesday Book.
There is no clear evidence that the derivation of the placename Swanley is 'a clearing for pigs'. I am sure this fiction was invented by a history teacher at Swanley School sometime in the late 1960s as a backhanded insult towards the kids he or she was expected to teach. If Swanley was a Saxon name chances are it would have received mention in Domesday. It didn't. The name is just as likely to be derived from the personal name Sven, Svein or something similar.
The Wiki fails to mention that the original settlement of the town of Swanley (as opposed to modern-day Swanley Village) was based around Birchwood which does get mention in later medieval and early modern documents.
Swanley was never a major flower growing or orchard area (at least not more so than any other part of North Kent). It did however house a horticultural college (now moved to Wye near Ashford) which helped develop some modern flower and fruit varieties.
The A20 Swanley bypass was built in the mid 1960s not the 1970s.
The shopping centre that predated ASDA was built in the 1970s not the 1960s.
Swanley in Greater London
[edit]@217.205.204.10: The article has been amended to claim parts of Swanley are in Greater London. The parish of Swanley does not cross the Greater London boundary. So what exactly is claimed to be both part of Swanley and within Greater London? Bus Info
[edit]Why remove the bus route info? Every other page has it. Very annoying. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.65.158.64 (talk) 19:16, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
