Attempts to change this into a redirect

[edit]

One editor keeps changing this into a redirect, first on the basis "WP:PRIMARYRED", but none of the entries here were redlinks, then later on the basis "WP:G14: If a disambiguation page links to only one article and does not end in (disambiguation), it should be changed to a redirect, unless it is more appropriate to move the linked page to the title currently used for the disambiguation page." But this G14 provision is pretty obviously about a redirect page existing with only a single link in it.

What we have here is a disambiguation page that is disambiguating between multiple units that had same same name. They coincidentally happen to be presently all be covered at the same list article, but this could change any time somone from WP:MILHIST got a wild hare to write more detailed material about any of the units. Furthermore, it is important that the reader understand that three different units by this name existed and that they may have to narrow their search. Simply redirecting them to the list article Highland Fencible Corps would mislead any number of them into thinking that the first occurrence of "Sutherland Fencibles" that they find on that page is necessarily the one they are looking for, and this would do our readers a serious disservice.

At least two editors have now reverted this conversion into a redirect, so there is no consensus to do it again, and the rationales provided so far in favor of doing it are not compelling.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  07:13, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Proper set index article

[edit]

Someone else put a {{SIA}} template on this in place of {{Disambiguation}}, but a proper WP:Set-index article would look more like the three examples given in the lead there, with fairly detailed information about entries: Dodge Charger, List of peaks named Signal, List of ships of the United States Navy named Enterprise. This could probably be achieved by actually merging most of the material out of the larger article into this one, and leaving behind WP:SUMMARY bits with hatnotes that point to the detailed sections here. Or the opposite could be done, and summarize here with sectional pointers to the other article. I prefer the former idea, because Highland Fencible Corps is about the entire class of such units, and detailed information about each really should be in unit-specific articles or, as in this case, in SIAs that are about successive units with the same name.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  02:30, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
