Last Bonfire of season
[edit]The last bonfire of the season is not Robertsbridge, but Mayfield. Also, Bexhill does not have a bonfire society.
I have to disagree - Mayfield's bonfire celebrations fall on the Saturday nearest 24th September, which is the date - in 1556 - that four protestant martyrs were put to death in the village. There are many other events throughout October and November with - in recent years - Robertsbridge generally being the last bonfire celebration of the "season" a fortnight or so after Guy Fawkes Night.

I am unable TO find data/dates for:
- - Vines Cross
- - Ridgewood (location within Uckfield)
- - Bexhill
My suspicion is that Ridgewood has folded and maybe so has Bexhill? Or Bexhill may just be like Eastbourne used to be: that is a walking society. This is where you visit others’ bonfire but you don’t actually have a night of your own.
I am positive that Vines Cross are active as they are at nearly every bonfire dressed in their scary skeleton costumes and there is vast numbers of them, there are also photos of their night on the net; however I can’t find a website or a date.
I have looked at the Horam/Vines Cross diary and website which lists a bonfire society but no date! It’s very frustrating. Vines Cross is in the Horam Parish.
Please can someone think of a way to incorporate a single set of dates into the article – User:Charliedeacon. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.79.59.99 (talk) 17:49, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Merge proposal
[edit]I am proposing that much of the section in the Lewes article on the Bonfire be included here, since it does state that it is the "focal point". It will give more details of what this is all about; which seems to be somewhat of an assumption in this article. There would be a short ref to this article then. Please let me know your thoughts on my talk page Peter Shearan (talk) 16:24, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
REAL Chronology of 2008 events

– Crowborough Society Carnival/Bonfire Night 20th September
– Mayfield Carnival/Bonfire Night 27th September
– Burgess Hill 4th October
– Rotherfield & Mark Cross 11th October
– Eastbourne – Fletching 18th October
– Hailsham – Hastings Borough 25th October
– Ewhurst & Staplecross - Burwash – Firle – Littlehampton Carnival / Bonfire Night – Nevill Juvenile 1st November

– Barcombe – Robertsbridge
Bonfires without their own celebrations: - Vines Cross - Whatlington Renegades (usually share Battle's night) - Maresfield Bonfire & Carnival - Merrie Harriers (Herstmonceux)(have a night sometime) - Five Ashes (recently formed in 2000) - Who The Devil Are We? (A small group of people dressed as devils and angels visiting other nights)
These societies usually only visit other nights without a night of their own (however I'm not too sure about Five Ashes. Merrie Harriers had theirs on Friday 26th October last year, so I'm not too sure.
Inactive societies: - Ridgewood —Preceding unsigned comment added by Charliedeacon (talk • contribs) 12:55, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
Beware of those dates, which are not correctly presented. Although the poster has shown a date after each set of outmeetings, that is not in fact the date for those societies - it is the date for those which follow it on the next line. I doubt if it is appropriate to edit somebody else's comment on a Talk page, so I can't correct it - but just remember to read it as though the date is at the start of the next line, not at the end of the line it's attached to. --Molly Mockford (talk) 17:41, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
Bonfire Societies and the Armada
[edit]I was under the impression that the Bonfire Societies of Sussex were formed following the failed invasion of England by the Spanish Armada in 1588. In the run-up to the invasion, many of the towns were tasked with maintaining bonfires which were to be lit upon first sighting of the invasion (each town would keep a look out for its neighbouring bonfire) thus giving London an early warning system. Following the invasion, many towns decided to commemorate the event by forming permanent societies.
Does anyone know the veracity of this version of events?Normalmouth (talk) 09:02, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
