prudish writing?
[edit]The discussion of having to store garbage inside the submarine, what's the big deal with that? is perplexing unless you consider that the article author is being prudish about defecation and urination and how those basic human processes are handled on a submarine. Invention

"deafened by the roaring"
[edit]There is a phrase sound-detection gear was deafened by the roaring of the air being sucked down the tube which looks incorrect to me. AFAIK, what mostly interfered with sonar operation was working diesel engine and not sound of the "sucked air" which probably much quieter. Russian wiki talks about engine noise, but without a reference. Did a quick search but also couldn't find a specific reference for the source of the interfering noise. Origin of the word snorkel

- It may sound german to you, it doesn't to me. In fact, it's dutch, apparently from the mid 20th entury. It has the same meaning as english snorkel. Dutch took the word from german Schnorchel, meaning snorkel or (dialectal) snout, which in turn is related to scharchen (to snore), an onomatopoeia. (Source: Van Dale ethymological dictionary.) - I know German when I see it. The Dutch called it a snuiver (sniffer) according to the article, although no citation is given. The British term snort is probably closest. Keegan doesn't even mention the English term snorkel.

- I haven't found the German etymology of schnorchel. Modern translations invariably equate it to snorkel. Here's the best explanation:

How did snorkel take in fresh air and also expel submarine's air?

- They didn't. The snorkel was an intake pipe, the exhaust was just bubbled out from beneath the water. Typically the engine exhaust was used for this - the engines ran on internal air in the submarine and their exhaust was the only outlet from the boat. Without a snorkel, there was a a single main induction valve, mounted as high as possible, so in the rear of the sail."7 Ventilation System". The Fleet Type Submarine Online. That main induction valve then supplied large ducts to the engine room and smaller ducts to the crew spaces, particularly forwards. Electric fans were used to move air forwards (long, narrow ducts don't flow well without assistance) but the main circulation effort was provided by the engine intakes. These used much more air than the crew did. At snorkel depth, the engine exhaust pressure was easily sufficient to overcome shallow water pressure.
- With snorkels, this was much the same. The snorkel was connected in to the single main induction trunk, just with a valve to control which was in use at the time. Snorkels typically had an automatic head valve too. Running for ventilation on the snorkel still required the engines to be running.
- Later on, there was more interest in running at snorkel depth but without the engines running. Only then did electric exhausters (i.e. enough pressure to overcome water pressure through the exhaust system) begin to be needed to maintain circulation through the whole system.
