Versus Books

[edit]

I am thinking of making a 'Versus Books' article here on Wiki. When did they go defunct? At about what time did their popularity and ratings go down? I remember reading their first ten or so guides, they were friggen hysterical. I loved the way they had the whole chilled out attitude working, and cracking jokes everytime chance they got. Anyway, any help would be appreciated.68.218.230.70 22:32, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I seldom have to justify my wiki edits, but since external links often become a point of contention, and I can sense some back and forth editing going on. Since I’ve been editing some time on wiki(previously on another account) I just want to say the point of the external links is not to promote start ups or well established companies; nor is it to promote profit guide sites or even non for profit ones. The links are just meant to provide users with balanced information for their convenience. Since I was the one that originally added the external links when there hardly anything, I can say there were meant to show the largest sites and the top ones in a particular specialty, i.e wiki strategy guides or video strategy guides etc.

Rksprst-I’m not sure if you’re connected to pwnGuide in some way, but try not to add direct links in the article, if you must talk about revenue sharing you can cite pwnGuide as a source.

Master Thief Garrett-StrategyWiki is awesome; I use and edit there myself a lot but doesn’t mean the other sites shouldn’t be included.

When I originally edited that was the only external link; gamefaqs definitely should’ve been added and in the interests of balancing out the strategy guide publishers’ external list I used the smallest company there, as a minimum criteria and added some like stuckgamer, which while small is actually the largest site for video guides(well if you don’t count youtube), pwnGuide and some other smaller but still as large as the publisher external links side ones. If anybody wants to take out links based on size make sure it’s applied even handily even to the companies that do have the money to make sure they stay on ie links on the publisher side external. I’m all for more people editing the external links but please do it with some transparency as I have; just write down a slight amount of reasons why you’ve edited how you have. Please disclose your affiliations too, I do not think it will be held against you it just makes sure the full story is heard. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Maverickhere (talkcontribs)

I removed links to small startups (like pwnGuide and the World of Warcraft one), and also to sites that in fact host FAQs, walkthroughs, or cheat codes (which should instead be covered on their respective pages). GameFAQs is of course an exception because it has had a tangible impact on the strategy guide market; the impact of the others is less clear. I decided against removing the StrategyWiki link because someone else added it and it actually is about strategy guide-style works (unlike some of the others), but in light of subsequent events it would probably be better to remove it to discourage similar/competing sites being added and again overflowing the external links. Additionally, it might be a good idea to add a hidden note (using <!-- -->) to explain the difference between FAQ/walkthrough/cheat sites and actual strategy guides as being defined in this article. Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Strategy guide. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:
