Plagiarism worry

[edit]

Hello, this page seems to use almost entirely the same wording as Stewart Pollens's personal page on the web. Can someone explain to me whether or not this is plagiarism? Without such reassurance I think we would have to rewrite or delete it. Thank you. Opus33 (talk) 01:57, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion of recent edits

[edit]

The plagiarism worried about above is not really a problem, as subsequent edits indicate that Mr. Pollens himself is the main source for this article.

However, Wikipedia tries to discourage subject-written articles; see Wikipedia:Autobiography, and third-party editors bear a responsibility to watch over them. I think the article is actually very helpful and have no wish to enforce policy by mass deletion. But I have taken a few modest steps to move the article a bit closer to Wikipedia standards:

  • imposing a standard WP outline (ordered thus: introduction, life, research, awards, bibliography), in the process removing a couple redundancies
  • a little bit of rewriting to avoid the sense of the article (which originated on a commercial web site) being advertising copy. There actually wasn't much of this (one example is "hailed" to describe a critic's words).
  • I added a glowing quote from Manze to the lead

I have tried to preserve all information throughout these edits, though sometimes rewording it or moving it around.
