Notable objects, photographs and manuscripts
[edit]It would be a helpful addition if this article contained a section about "Notable objects" under the "Collections" heading. Whiteghost.ink (talk) 11:23, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- I'm about to add a starter list based on the website and books about the library's collections. Rubicon49bce (talk) 01:05, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Great! Some suggestions below for items, photographs and manuscripts.
Items such as:
- First Fleet journals,
- Cook's waistcoat,
- Bligh's Bounty log,
- Patrick White's Nobel Prize.
Photographic collections such as:
- the Holtermann Collection,
- the Australian Consolidated Press collection.
- The collection of Eugene von Guerard's sketchbooks, and some of his paintings.
Manuscript collections such as:
- the Angus & Robertson archive,
- the papers of Sir Joseph Banks, including his Endeavour journal,
- the journals of Governor Macquarie.

Mitchell librarians
[edit]A list of the Mitchell librarians and an explanation of the difference in their role from the State librarians would be helpful to readers. Whiteghost.ink (talk) 01:26, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- List is done - I reworked the "State Librarians" section to make it Governance and added the list there. Rubicon49bce (talk) 22:28, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'm also working on a brief summary of the Mitchell Librarian position and history - should be in the article soon. Rubicon49bce (talk) 03:02, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
History
[edit]The history section is starting to look like an essay. I suggest that some of its contents be redistributed. For example, a section on "Bequests" or "Important donors" might take some of the material; a section on "Controversies" might cover more than one of them. A section on "Acquisitions" might cover some of the bequests as well policy and practice. There are a range of possibilities but the history section needs a different structure because at the moment it is difficult for a reader to find the information about these matters as they are deep within a narrative. Whiteghost.ink (talk) 23:39, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
- Other examples of library and museum articles eg. Library of Congress, British Library, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, British Museum all use a similar chronological structure for the history section of their articles. Acquisitions are described in the collections section, with more than 5 million items in the collection and numerous major acquisitions each year only some of the most notable collection items are listed, although more could be listed. 202.0.106.130 (talk) 03:45, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
