POV

[edit]

I am not bold enough to dispute the POV myself, as I am a new editor, but IMHO it reads like an advertisment, I will do some research and edit in a couple of weeks, but right now, end of term is killing me. Life Now (talk) 00:39, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism is out of date

[edit]

I agree about the general assertion about the subtle way that this software gets installed and its overall characterization. I found a new shortcut on my desktop and it took some effort to figure out who put it there. The Wikipedia entry here told me how it got there.

I first had to look at the shortcut properties to find the location of the program. Then, I had to turn on the compay name attribute in explorer to discover that the progrm the shortcut pointed to was developed by Starfield Technologies. IMO, this is not the kind of thing an average computer user would be able to do which leads me to agree that this program is bloatware and instrusive.

The Starfield web site could not be more obscure. It did reference GoDaddy but provided no information of any kind that would help anyone determine what the program did. It looked very suspicious to me. Why not provide the information if they didn't have anything to hide?

However, some of the assertions about the nature of the software on Windows is no longer valid. The version that got installed on my computer yesterday did not require Admin privileges and uninstalled quite easily.

In my case, it installed itself in the AppData\Local directory under the user account I used to check my GoDaddy account yesterday. It did not install itself in any other user account. I recall now installing a program so that I could paste a picture into an email. It didn't even work.

I found this page very useful in answering my questions, but it doesn't really serve as a good source of business information on Starfield Technologies. 15:26, 1 April 2012 (UTC) Ralphmackiewicz (talk) 15:26, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

>"uninstalled quite easily"

Are you sure it did uninstall completely?
