doubt it
[edit]I seriously doubt whether Cavell ought to be considered a deconstructionist. Anyone want to weigh in?
- Whatever referred to that seems to have been removed, but no, he shouldn't be considered one. He directs a few criticisms (to my mind, apt ones) specifically at deconstructionism in "Philosophical Passages." Anarchic Fox 09:17, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
- Correction: the remarks I referred to were part of "In Quest of the Ordinary," specifically the section "Skepticism and a Word concerning Deconstruction". Anarchic Fox 22:47, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
A matter of cultural violence
[edit]An experienced editor suggested I come and ask this deserted talk page before making a change.
As related in either A Pitch of Philosophy or Little Did I Know (sorry, I don't remember which), Cavell's birth surname was given to his father at Ellis Island by a callous bureaucrat. Imperfectly remembered, Cavell was horrified at the fact that his father, whom he hates (Little Did I Know somewhere around the one-third mark), was proud of this act of cultural violence.
So yeah, come discuss. Or you could ask him yourself. His contact information is public. He's still alive. -_- — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anarchic Fox (talk • contribs) 15:46, 14 May 2018 (UTC) Thank you, SineBot.
- Hated notwithstanding, legally (at least historically) that's a surname from which he can never escape? Martinevans123 (talk) 17:57, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah, but that doesn't mean the information should be placed at the very start of a biographical page. The start of the body is kinda important. And in the page's current state, there is nowhere else to put it (besides the infobox). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anarchic Fox (talk • contribs) 21:34, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
Goodbye
[edit]In my opinion, you were the greatest American philosopher of your era. I have nowhere to leave a eulogy, so here will have to suffice. Anarchic Fox (talk) 20:31, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Kids
[edit]Information about his children should not be included in the body of the text, since there is nothing that references their influence upon his work. Strictly personal data like this is best restricted to the infobox. Gulbenk (talk) 02:58, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
