Railroad

The article currently states that "a railroad" used to run through the town. I'm 99.9% sure it would be the Utah Railway, the connecting line just downstream is was and is still the main line for that company. Dave (talk) 23:10, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just checked with the book Utah Ghost Rails. There were two railroad lines built up the canyon, both originally by the mining companies, but later acquired by the railroads mentioned above. I'm trying to compare the maps and prose in the book with Google's satellite view. It's pretty clear which is which in the lower part of the canyon. What Google is labeling Spring Canyon Road was the D&RG grade; the unnamed road just to the north of Spring Canyon Road, is the Utah Railway grade. However just below Standardville the two paths get very close to each other, and the google images are hard to decipher. It looks like further up the canyon Spring Canyon road goes back and forth on which railroad grade is used. Per the map in the book, the depot at Standardville was on the Line owned by the Utah Railway. However, the prose of the book does say the D&RG did serve Standardville. Both the map in the book and Google's satellite image imply the two lines converged somewhere near Standardville, the map in the book implies just upstream from Standardville, the satellite images imply just downstream from the town. I'm inclined to believe my interpretation of the satellite images, as the map in the book was provided by the Utah Railway, so has a bias. =-) So, do you know who owned the depot, given the sources I have aren't 100% clear? Despite the claim by the map in the book it was the Utah Railway, I'm inclined to agree it was most likely the D&RG from the text and satellite images. Dave (talk) 03:45, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure the depot would've been owned by the same company that ran the railroad; that is, the D&RG Railroad. The Utahraptor (talk) 13:30, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This does not match the sources I've found. I already mentioned the book Utah Ghost Rails above, which has a map showing Standardville on the Utah Railway line (with both companies having lines in the canyon). The USGS Topo Maps (don't know why I didn't check there earlier) are more detailed. However both maps show the same thing, Standardville was on the Utah Railway Line. The D&RG line (shown as "OLD RAILROAD GRADE" on the USGS) is routed through the canyon, but serves the communities farther up the canyon. [1]. Dave (talk) 18:25, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It appears so. Again, the book Utah Ghost Rails does say the D&RG served Standardville, just doesn't make it clear how they did it (i.e. if they had a separate depot or if their was a connection between the two lines.) I'm still surprised that communities that small and that remote had not one, but two competing railroad serving them. I never would have guessed that. Dave (talk) 18:30, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
