"Springboard" is a metaphor. That fact should be referenced here.

[edit]

Is no one aware that most or all of these uses of "springboard" are metaphorical references to the (low-tech) device used by loggers until the early-to-mid 20th-century, viz., a board pushed into a notch that had been cut with an ax into the lower part of generally an old-growth tree, on which a logger or loggers then stood at still fairly low elevation, to saw down the rest of the tree? This should be documented on Wikipedia, and certainly referenced on this page.--IfYouDoIfYouDon't (talk) 23:36, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, on second thought, I can see that the diving board use is probably not an extension of the logging term, the two are likely independent of one another. However, the logging expression definitely bears mentioning. There are parts of the English-speaking world where I daresay the logging device will come to mind first, as in many places a diving board is simply not called a springboard, but only a diving board.--IfYouDoIfYouDon't (talk) 07:46, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
