Should we link to Nanpu bridge (in Shanghai), which provides an example of this on a larger scale? google maps

I rather doubt the "invention" of the pigtail bridge in the 1930s in the US stands up to closer scrutiny: Swiss railroad tunnels famously use the same principle to change elevation, and some of the lines are older than the 1930s.
