In my edit of 27 January 2007 I have incorporated some information from http://docsouth.unc.edu/nc/manual/manual.html
I also want to note an inconsistency that I don't have the resources to reconcile. The North Carolina State Manual of 2001-2002, from which much of this entry's information is drawn, says that the colonial assembly was unicameral at first, until about 1697, but it still lists speakers of the House of Burgesses (which shouldn't have existed until about 1697) starting in 1666. Also note that the manual says that there is no documentary evidence of the 1666 assembly. So, what I'm saying is, although I have included speakers before 1697, I don't know what exactly it meant to be the speaker before 1697. Also, the reason that the date for John Campbell is "1754-c. 1760" is that Connor's state manual (http://docsouth.unc.edu/nc/manual/manual.html) explains that Campbell resigned as speaker sometime between 1754 and 1760 (one long assembly, with 9 sessions) and Swann took over as speaker for the remainder of that assembly. Swann was then elected speaker for the 1760 assembly, the 1761 assembly, and the first 1762 assembly, but he declined to continue in 1762 on account of his health. Awbeal 16:40, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
