SETAF early history

[edit]

The Southern European Task Force, the Army's first overseas missile command, has completed its fifth year as integral link in NATO's European chain of defense in Italy.

SETAE was activated in Italy on October 25, 1955 as a prototype combat-ready, atomic-capable support force. A Bi-National Italo-American missile command, SETAF has its headquarters in Verona. From there, the command directs the activities of the 1st US Army Missile Command and III Italian Missile Brigade in Vicenza; the 8th Logistical Command in Leghorn; and the SETAF Special Troops in Boscomantico and Verona.

The 1st Msl Comd, under the command of Col Robert E. Coffin, is a streamlined organization with a potent punch. Highly mobile Corporal missile units, which furnish devastating power, are supplemented by engineer, signal, quartermaster, ordnance, medical and transportation elements.

Exercise Natural Fire

[edit]

Military forces from the United States, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania conducted a joint-combined field training exercise knows as Natural Fire 98 in East Africa. The exercise, which was held 6 - 26 June, 1998, was intended to improve regional security, military-to-military relations and interoperability between the participating nations.

The exercise included military training, but focused on humanitarian assistance to include Medical Civic Action Projects (MEDCAP), disaster relief training, peace operations training, and civil affairs orientation and planning. The exercise represented an opportunity for U.S. forces to provide humanitarian assistance and to improve the ability of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to respond to and minimize the devastating effects of a disaster. About 500 U.S. Military personel were involved.

During 2000, Natural Fire/Native Fury was a joint and combined-ground fleet training exercise designed to test deployment of MSC's Maritime Prepositioning Squadrons, or MPSRON, to Kenya. The exercise focused on off-load, throughput, force stand up and subsequent regeneration of a MPSRON. A secondary mission was multilateral peace support operations with a civil affairs focus on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. MSC assets involved included MPSRON Two vessel MV Cpl. Louis J. Hauge and commercial sealift charters MV BBC Canada, MV Maersk Alaska and MV Arktis Pacific.

Propose merging Ninth United States Army with United States Army Africa

[edit]

These two organizations were merged in 2012 as United States Army Africa (Ninth Army), merging their linage, I propose that we do the same here. Here is the history page http://www.usaraf.army.mil/about/history. Garuda28 (talk) 21:22, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose merge, as the WWII history of the Ninth United States Army is independently notable of the more modern activities of the United States Army Africa, which itself has a distinct and parallel history from its formation in 1955. There is no obligation to follow the actions of the Reorganization plan of United States Army. Klbrain (talk) 22:06, 5 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
