Above Bar merge proposal
[edit]Posted at Talk:Above Bar at 22:17, 21 December 2006 (UTC): Above Bar isn't a district of Southampton in its own right; Above Bar Street is a street, but the area it's in is simply the city centre. Waggers 12:35, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- Merge has now been completed. Waggers 12:44, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Old Town merge proposal
[edit]The Old Town article is just a stub and there's very little more to add to it. "Old Town" isn't really a district of Southampton in its own right, it's part of the city centre so the information belongs in this article. Anyone disagree? Waggers 21:58, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- For some reason (unknown to me) I've only just got round to adding the merge tag to the source article! Merge will take place a week from now if no opposition is forthcoming. Waggers 11:09, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, I oppose this. I see Old Town as being considerably different to the City Centre. I think there's potential in keeping Old Town separate, when I finally get some time I intend to pad it out with more history! (I was briefly looking right now in fact!) When I think City Centre, I think shopping. Old Town is something rather special on the side, all about history. I'm open to being convinced, however. AlanFord 11:12, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- The question is, are they distinct geographically? If "old town" refers to the old city walls and the older buildings (such as the museums, Southampton Terminus), they're spread out throughout the city centre. There's no reason why we can't describe the history and "today's" city centre in the same article - in fact that's what all the geography articles aim to do! Waggers 11:37, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well, I've got a map here of Old Town that defines it pretty much as I would: Bounded by the main Western Esplanade road on the South and West, round to Gods House Tower, and up the High Stree to the Bargate. Basically, everything encompassed by the old Medieval city walls. Basically, I think there's plenty to write about and it is a clearly defined area, but whether it would be better suited as a section in the City Centre article I'm not so sure. It's a little outside what most people would think of as the centre, I would have thought. Whether that's accurate or not is another matter! AlanFord 14:21, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, I'd be quite concerned if we ended up with a city centre that didn't include the High Street! By the same token, it sounds like your map of Old Town excludes the medieval city walls to the East of the High Street. If "Old Town" is to concentrate on the medieval city as opposed to the same geographical area today, perhaps it should be renamed "Medieval Southampton" - although I still think it would sit better as a history within the same article. Waggers 15:14, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Time to be bold as no further discussion since April; merge completed. Waggers 11:57, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Proposed merge with Southampton
[edit]I am against the proposed merge of articles suggested it would cause a loss of information in many cases and an overloading of the main page. Notably a similar set of proposals was made by an anonymous user to disrupt the Portsmouth page and those of its schools information is here and also here -- Drappel 21:38, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
Proposed merge with Bargate (ward)
[edit]I recently created the Bargate (ward) page, and think that it might be a positive step to merge that page with the Southampton City Centre article to create a new page, naming it Bargate Ward (Southampton City Centre). The City Centre is not an officially defined area, whereas Bargate Ward is, and the City Centre article already extends into areas such as West Quay. The only controversial area of the current Bargate Ward, I suspect, would be St Marys. Playclever (talk) 09:44, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- I don't oppose the merge per se, but would argue strongly that St Mary's and the city centre are distinct and separate areas. Also, per WP:COMMONNAME, the more common name, rather than any official name, should apply. I don't hear many people getting on a bus in Southampton and asking to be taken to the Bargate ward - Southampton City Centre is far more commonly used, and that name should remain. Waggers (talk) 19:31, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- In retrospect, I agree, the two separate pages make more sense. I'll remove the proposal Playclever (talk) 11:15, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Bargate Centre merge proposal
[edit]I believe the article on the Bargate centre should be merged into this article, as the current contents of the Bargate article are insufficient to keep it as one seperate article and it seems ridiculous to keep it seperate. Rafmarham (talk) 17:54, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
- Support - makes sense to me. waggers (talk) 11:29, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
