WP:IMAGE is part of the MOS, a set of "generally accepted standards"; I think the more relevant page to look at is WP:GALLERY, a section of the formal Image Use Policy. Whether or not the gallery should be included in the article in its current state is questionable; I think ideally the Route section should be expanded and those images placed alongside it to illustrate some of the key points along the route. So ideally the gallery should not be there, but it would be odd to add those images to the short Route section that currently exists.
Some of them could be used alongside existing sections - for example the Beachy Head picture is a good illustration of the chalky downland referred to in the Geography section. But images that don't illustrate something the article's text refers to should not be included unless the subject "cannot be easily or adequately described by text".
