Name

According to the article, "The name 'Soroptimist' was coined by combining the Latin words soror 'sister' and optimus 'best', and can be taken to mean 'best for sisters' (referring to women in general)." Best for sisters? I don't think so. It is more likely that the name means sisters who are optimists. "Optimist" is most likely a reference to people who hope for the best or who look on the bright side. "Best for sisters" doesn't sound right in the English language.Lestrade (talk) 23:02, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Lestrade

It doesn't really obey the rules of classical Latin compounding (or at best it has a semi-mysterious haplology), so it's semi-useless to attempt deduce what it should mean based in its components. It basically means what they say it means... AnonMoos (talk) 13:20, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

"It basically means what they say it means" is quite an authoritative, categorical, declarative statement. Let it be "best for sisters," then, and let the deuce take those who reflect and cannot make sense of that phrase.Lestrade (talk) 15:48, 19 October 2011 (UTC)Lestrade

If had they followed the classical rules, then it would be possible to work out what it should mean according to those rules. Since they didn't, the whole exercise seems semi-pointless to me... AnonMoos (talk) 16:42, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
I have added the ref to the organisation's history page where they describe their understanding of the derivation of the name. Hope this helps. Ancienterracht (talk) 07:29, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
