General comments
[edit]The article seems focused on a particular design of solar still, rather than solar still in general. There are multiple ways to design a solar still. Google "watercone solar still" for example. There are many more. The link "http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SOLAR_DISTILLATION_PROJECT/ ( Make your own solar powered still) [Yahoo! group no longer active]" may as well be removed. It is no longer even possible to access old pages for it (the user is simply greeted with a page saying that the group is not found.)
Poor link description
[edit]The link titled "Compares the efficiency of several solar still methods" is very misleading. The article is actually quite fascinating, but the point of the article is not the comparison of different methods of solar distillation. The purpose of the article is to call into question the ubiquitous belief that solar stills are valuable in a survival setting. Great link, but the description should be something more like, "Alternative viewpoint on the effectiveness of solar stills."
Flat Plate Solar Stills?
[edit]Continuing on from the above comment, it would be nice to have a section on flat plate solar stills, there are numerous hits with Google, and I came here hoping for the usual Wikipedia unbiased description. I'm curious as to why Solar powered (via PV) Reverse osmosis units are preferred over direct distillation in flat plates, it would seem that the flat plate approach would be more energy efficient?? Needs some formulas
[edit]It would be nice if this article included some formulas to predict the water production of a solar still. Something like the area and temperature and amount of fluid is what I'm thinking but don't know if there is something like that. Crushacm (talk) 04:30, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Not distillation
[edit]Despite the name, it does not distill. The process is evaporation which is non-boiling vaporization from a surface not bulk. Chemical Engineer (talk) 16:32, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
- I would disagree with the above note , fractional distillation and steam distillation do not use "boiling" of the bulk liquid, in general , I would think that bulk boiling would be bad thing as it would splash droplets around. Although some dictionaries dfefine distilation as boiling + condensation, most others define it as a process using evaporation and condensation. Also efficiency measures such as heat exchangers and pressure manipulation won't create bulk boiling. I also have a suspicion that "endothermic" salt solutions won't bulk boil anyway, as the thermodynamics will favour boiling at the surface.Salbayeng (talk) 21:40, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
