I think this article is hysterical. I mean read the criticisms. I laughed out loud.
Should discuss existence of socks with toes. --Daniel C. Boyer 18:33, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Also perhaps the mention of garters before the advent of elastic. This page should link to stockings.
This article used to be brilliant, where did it all go?

Missing in the history section
When did people start using socks? Are all the people in the world using it? What about archeological findings? I wish there were answers to these questions. This article needs editing regarding tone.
Here's more info, for whoever will decide to improve the article: [1]. I'd be interested in more information on which materials are better at doing away with moisture. On a side note, the article as it stands now reads more like Unencyclopedia rather than Wikipedia. --Gutza T T+ 10:01, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

I have merged the socks link and socks bag articles into this one. aliceinlampyland 15:48, 1 February 2006 (UTC).

Somebody should put stuff in about the different styles of socks. No show. Crew. Knee-high. Women's hose. Jenab. lots of people like blue socks
not that much sweat, surely!
i really don't believe that the average human foot sweats half a pint per day. Could somebody please confirm? In any case, needs a citation.

- Have you never had a sock war? Get some friends round, find as many (preferably) clean socks as you can, roll them into balls, remove all breakable objects, and have fun! -- Tivedshambo (talk) 08:12, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
Possum fur?
I am finding it hard to believe that people in Australia, New Guinea and Sulawesi made socks out of the fur of small animals. This needs a citation.
Remove all breakable objects. . . where is the fun in that now
Fetish section?
Is this necessary? Its more gross and immature then informative. 24.149.151.254 05:35, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Okay, we're all talking about how bad it is. SO I am going to just rip out chunks of the article mercilessly. Sometimes total destruction benefits an article.--Whytecypress 16:42, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Sock City?
Saw this mentioned on Colbert Report and did a little homework. I was surprised to see absolutely no information about it here. A large percent of the worlds sock supply comes from Datang, a condensed specialized indutrial center located in China. I confirmed this on a few reputable sources such as [2].

we can also add how to wash socks
250 ml a day does not add up to one liter a year. Either, it is 100 l a year, or it is 2½ ml a day. I don't know, what is the right amount. Anyway, what's the relevans?
I don't think it would be bad to add a small section with the overall factual procedure. If you can find some relevant references that wouldn't be a bad idea. Also can you please sign your posts with 4 tildes, so we know who's saying, what. businessman332211 14:06, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
SOCKS
Hi all. I discovered that "socks" redirects to this page. However, there is no link to the disambiguation page containing a link to SOCKS. Many people want information about SOCKS.90.128.120.237 (talk) 21:10, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Sock sizes
What's this about sock sizes ranging from 8.5 to 11.5? What about baby socks, or really-big-man socks? - /too lazy to login/ 209.195.64.20 (talk) 00:41, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Brainstorming
I think there ought to be a section that talks about the variety of socks. The first paragraph itemizes the uses and purposes of socks, but the article doesn't elaborate. An expanded version of the article could have international socks, kids socks, dress vs. casual socks, othopedic socks, etc. Also, are there any famous socks or historical incidents with the critical involvement of socks? Are there any countries that ban socks, or have other legislation involving socks? How about a link to sock hops or the Red Sox? How about a section about socks in sports? What about a section on how to choose socks for the right activity (hiking, dancing, etc), or fashion rules of choosing socks for different occasions or for use with certain clothing items? Can we put in something about sayings involving socks, like "knock your socks off" or "put a sock in it"? There is still a lot of room for improvement in this article. Revert back to previous article
Since we are all talking about how bad this article is and how good it used to be, should we revert it to a previous edition? 76.204.146.108 (talk) 21:56, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- Which old version do you like, or more specifically, which sections or bits of info? ABlake (talk) 00:00, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
- I like the versions written in 2006: they were the most informative. However, if we ever revert, we should give the article A LOT of cleanup --75.58.114.40 (talk) 02:07, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Stump sock
I am an amputee that wears a *sock* on a body part that is not or does not contain a foot: on my arm stump. Given that, I find Wikipedia's definition of 'sock' as footwear too narrow. Stump socks are usually worn to protect a stump, keep it warm, or to compress it similarly to wearing compression stockings to prevent swollen legs. The page is locked. Language wise discrimination against amputees ("you use the word 'sock' without proper legitimation" is what a colleague recently said) is behind other discrimination so you'd want to fix that. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Swisswuff (talk • contribs) 09:31, 2 February 2009 (UTC) sockies
- At very least I added stump sock to the socks disambiguation page, but yes, it could probably stand a mention on this page too. Centerone (talk) 08:04, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
What are"tube socks"
If often hear Americans on TV speak about "tube socks" and I have no idea exactly what they are.Eregli bob (talk) 10:22, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
"Tube socks" were knitted without a defined heel. Off the foot, the sock would be a straight "tube". The knit was stretchy, allowing for the sock to fit the heel when worn. The idea, as I recall, was that you could turn it to a different orientation each time you wore it and so even out the wear, the heel area being prone to greater wear than other parts, except possibly for the toe area. As I recall they were somewhat popular in the 70s, perhaps even into the 80s, mostly in white socks for casual and athletic wear. Wschart (talk) 01:45, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

This article needs cleanup, better pictures, a lot more citation, and I suspect that parts of it are just made up and ought to be removed. |
