This is basically an advertisement for Facebook

This article is a sham, in that Facebook, which is technically a microblog, is extensively referenced, even when we have a bazillion other sites to talk about, especially dating web applications, which fit the social network category better, such as tinder, eharmony etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yoandri Dominguez Garcia (talkcontribs) 06:46, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Social Networking service is not synonyms with social media.

I removed "Social Media" as a synonym for "Social Networking Service" in the lead as the term "Social Media" has a broader sense as well as the fact that it has it's own article. While some people may misuse the term "Social media" as synonym for "Social networking services", that does not make them synonymous. If it can be demonstrated that "Social Media" can refer strictly to "Social networking services" then we should put a disambiguation link on the "Social Media" article explaining that the term can also be used specific in the narrower sense to refer to ""Social networking services". As of now though I don't see any evidence for that so I removed it from the lead. --2600:1700:56A0:4680:CDDC:DCCC:5E70:1B00 (talk) 20:05, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Social: "Networking" vs. "Media", "Service" vs. "Platform"

I hear/read the phrases "Social Media" and "Social Media Platform" far more often than I do "Social Networking Service". I'm wondering if there isn't some kind of authoritative "Official Namer of Things" that uses this phrase, instead of what more frequently sees online. Where does this term come from, is it the best term to use, could it be changed and should it be changed? Could there be some kind of "disambiguating" language to clarify in the Lede? I also note that Gab is not mentioned, and it's Article describes it as a "Social Network".2605:6000:6947:AB00:403D:E24D:E465:4A0 (talk) 04:17, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

This is a good point. Unfortunately, this general topic has a lot of problems on Wikipedia, but I don't think there's an easy fix.
There are a lot of reliable sources about this, but also a huge amount of 'refspam' (including "native advertising" blog posts) and churnalism. As the post above this one (from August) points out, there is a lot of overlap between this article and Social media. I would add Mobile social network, since Web social network isn't a thing and just seems anachronistic at this point, but perhaps that's a separate issue.
Gab is included at List of social networking websites along with dozens of other which I've never heard of, but that apparently have millions of users. That list is incomplete and out of date, but this demonstrates how difficult lists are to maintain. We also have List of defunct social networking websites, microblogging, Comparison of online dating services, etc... We cannot possibly list all of these sites here, so we need to rely on independent sources to highlight examples for us.
Love them or hate them, Facebook and Twitter are significant to the topic of "social networking services" according to many reliable sources (industry, academic, and journalistic) spanning years. If you know of a reliable source explaining how Gab is similarly significant, I would like to see it. Grayfell (talk) 05:50, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Merging 'social networking service' and 'social media'

This posting was in nearly identical form posted also on Talk:Social media#Merging 'social networking service' and 'social media', where it has led to a (constructive) discussion between me and one other editor. Therefore, if you wish to comment on this issue, please do it in Talk:Social media#Merging 'social networking service' and 'social media' and not any longer in this talk section. Looking into the articles social media and social networking service, they seem to a large extent to cover the same subject. (Look at their tables of contents: there really is quite much and essential overlap.) The phenomenon simply seems to have begotten two names: 'social networking service' the more neutral, scientific/technical name, 'social media' more of a 'plugging', promoting name, presumably pushed by the companies (Facebook etc.) themselves (with implicit suggestion: we are 'social', the 'old media' (TV, newspapers etc.) are not—do we, Wikipedia, need to further support that strong token 'social media' that the companies have invented for selfpromotion?)
Most importantly: if the two articles basically treat the same subject (from perhaps slightly different but complementing(!) angles, now and then) they SHOULD be merged.
After that primal decision is taken, we can discuss further about the definitive title of the merged page (with ofcourse all alternative titles becoming a REDIRECT).
(I disagree with the statement given in the previous talk section 25July2018: how much 'social media' do we know that fall beyond (that do not use) 'social networking services'? The 'problems' that editor seems to describe would disappear by merging the articles. Even if the terms would be proven to be not fully 100% synonymous, but their articles would for 90% or more bear on the same phenomena, it would be better and expedient to merge the articles.) --Corriebertus (talk) 08:13, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Possible citation check needed on the first line

"A social networking service (also social networking site, SNS or social media) is a web application that people use to build social networks or social relations with other people who share similar personal or career interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections."

Does not appear to follow from the content of the cited material. Rather the cited material states that the social network built and maintained is online, this is an important distinction.
