Should we add a mention to this article that the CB slang term "smokey," referring to highway patrol officers, is based on Smokey Bear? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 02:54, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Name: 60's & 70's

[edit]

The name was always "Smokey the Bear" and it was never, ever Smokey Bear. Smokey the Bear was always THE bear cub that survived a forest fire. Hence, Smokey the Bear makes sense. 2601:249:187F:D35F:D9DF:9B60:15D0:4842 (talk) 16:20, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

High school mascot in 1939???

[edit]

If, as claimed in the "Peak in Popularity" section, a high school in Black Hills City, South Dakota was granted the rights to use Smokey as their mascot in 1939, the dates do not add up as Smokey was not created and adopted as the Forest Service mascot until 1944. Either the high school got its date wrong, or they waited until at least 5 years after their students' forest firefighting participation to adopt Smokey as their mascot, or somebody is Blowing Smoke (pun definitely intended)!
