Unclear statement, contradictory statement

Skip-link chain is typically arranged with the long plates also the wide-spaced outer plates, which mimics the visual effect of block chain.

This sentence makes no sense, and I don't understand what it is supposed to mean. I checked history, and this sentence has been on the page since the page was first created. I can only guess that some other word was intended instead of also.

Para 3

Skip link chain became obsolete sometime in the 1950s because roller chain was becoming more widely used in the manufacturing of bicycles.

This sentence needs adjusting, if it is correct as stated in paragraph 1, that skip link chain is itself a roller chain.
