Fair play, you seem to know your stuff. You should right this article again. It is good to know that there are people who actually know what they are talking about —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chubbyhamster61 (talkcontribs) 01:34, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. The closing comment about Skibadee being on a downslope for the last 6 years due to "antics" is also out of line and would require a citation. Not to mention proper spelling. 198.203.192.166 (talk) 18:05, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There are offensive bits of text here - people who have written this are clearly taking the piss. This should be sorted out as it's disrespectful. W1gglyW00s (talk) 00:08, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Does Skibadee really warrant a WP article?

[edit]

I know this seems like a callous question after his recent death (RIP, he was a fantastic MC) but that's what WP is supposed to be: cold and calculat[ed|ing] (it's not, due to the ideological bias of the Wikirati, but that's beside the point). Skibadee is, as far as I'm aware, the only UK rave MC, outside of Hyper D, to have an article.

I understand Stevie D having an article more than I do Skiba. D was one of the pioneers of modern lyrical and double-time MCing in UK rave and actually released recorded music, giving him a discography to speak of. Skiba's article, OTOH, is simply a description of how he became an MC and how his career resulted in him winning awards that are equally unimpressive (according to the orthodox, i.e. WP's, perspective). Look, I know that some of us DNB fans care about the Drum & Bass Arena Awards, but they're not considered remotely noteworthy by the mainstream, hence their lack of a WP article. Hell, forget awards, even Drum & Bass Arena itself - one of the biggest sites/orgs/forums in DNB history - had its WP article removed for being insignificant/irrelevant. The only noteworthy things about Skiba from a mainstream (i.e. WP) perspective (which is absolutely not my own, BTW) is that he technically scored a chart single by being vaguely attached to Dillinja's "Twist 'Em Out" and that he died at a young age (and he died before his article was created so that wasn't even a factor). To even accurately ascertain his age when he died, editors of this article had to rely on a Facebook post by his family of all things.

My question then is: what has Skiba done that Harry Shotta, Shabba D, Eksman etc. haven't? Shotta has, IMO, an even stronger case for an article than Skiba. Certainly, one could cover a lot more verifiable ground and generate a lot more volume with Shotta. With a Guinness World Record taken from Eminem, a presence on the UK charts, a successful book release, his groundbreaking work on bringing DNB MCing to BBC Radio 1 and 1 Xtra, and an extensive discography of real releases, including collaborations with a vast number of noteworthy UK urban artists (all with their own WP articles), it seems like Shotta should have an article. But attempts to create one have resulted in predictable deletion, even when it was created in 2015, after he'd just broken records with "Animal". It seems like most articles pertaining to DNB are doomed to die, and I'm not sure what's different about Stevie D and Skiba. (I wonder if a new Shotta article today would also be deleted -- frankly, who'd want to take the chance of writing one just to see their effort, most likely, wasted? I've been there, done that.)

Is the problem that Skiba has an article or that other key figures like Shotta et al. don't? WP clearly has minimal or zero interest in DNB-related topics (it probably doesn't help that most of the history of jungle and DNB is oral and has never been recorded by ""reliable"" [WP again] sources). Personally, I've always felt like the maximalists have a point. A bunch of editors fled WP when the administrative cabal refused to host separate articles for each different Pokemon, even though there was no good technical or methodological reason not to do so, IMO. Sure, that was a trivial issue but it was a landmark "ruling" in terms of WP's attitude to inclusion. Anyway, I guess I'm not really expecting to achieve any meaningful change here; more simply highlighting how fundamentally broken WP's inclusion policies are (along with near enough everything else: the bureaucracy, the pedantic rules, the community's implicit and explicit biases -- the whole damn system, right down to begging for money like clockwork regardless of the fact that WP is actually loaded).

IDK why I wrote an essay on the subject. I suppose the inconsistency, the contradictions - dare I say, the hypocrisy - suddenly inspired me, in a negative sense, to pose the questions. Though most subjects on WP have self-appointed "experts" watching over them like hawks, to ensure that they always conform to the dilettantes' own views, I severely doubt that DNB has any such editor. If it did, maybe all those articles wouldn't have been deleted. Elliott-AtomicInfinity (talk) 00:35, 27 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
