Argumentative essay
[edit]In its current form, this is not an encyclopedia article. It is an argumentative essay that takes a position, viz., “there are similarities between Pyrrhonism and Buddhism” and “the similarities are the result of mutual influence.” These claims are not facts; they are controversial. But the article takes a side and gives no space to the controversy. An accessible introduction to this subject, which gives better coverage, is in the following episodes of the podcast History of Philosophy without Any Gaps:
- 46. No four ways about it: Nāgārjuna’s tetralemma
- 47. Jan Westerhoff on Nāgārjuna
- 54. Graham Priest on logic and Buddhism
I make these observations here because my attempts to edit the article have been reverted, and I refuse to play the edit warrior. Expert neutral advice would be very welcome. —- ℜob C. alias ALAROB 17:22, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Alarob: I agree with you, I think the topic is really interesting and I did some more research on it especially starting with Beckwith's book (forming the basis of the alleged Buddhist influences on Pyrrhonism in this chapter), however the other academic sources I could find on this (Goodman 2018; Batchelor 2016) do not really support his findings at all. This means that this article advances a view which is not at all widely shared, and also gives undue weight to this point of view. I am, however, not an expert either, but the article definitely has some issues with balance. --MartijnK- (talk) 22:46, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
Meditation section
[edit]The section just added on meditation is based on a source [1] that fails to meet WP:RS as it is an unpublished masters thesis. Can something better be found? I'm hoping that Kuzminski's new book, due out next month will have something on this. Teishin (talk) 13:59, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
Paragraph Removal
[edit]I removed the paragraph "Greek influence on Indian thought" - that paragraph discussed nothing of relevance to the topic of this article (Similarities b/w Pyrrhonism and Buddhism) and would be more appropriate in some other wiki article. Abh9850 (talk) 22:55, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
Merge
[edit]I have merged this page to Pyrrhonism, as, like the comments above state, this is an interesting and complex issue that need to be done right, and I additionally believe that it needs to be treated in comparison with the other historical developments of Pyrrhonism from earlier Greek philosophy. This could perhaps be spun out later, but as of now it is a WP:CFORK that is a controversial issue. - car chasm (talk) 09:00, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
