Simon or Simeon?

[edit]

The HABS website and its writeup describe the place being built by Simeon E. Dow. The local website gives Simon E. Dow. Which is right? doncram (talk) 18:22, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article name

[edit]

I hereby protest the renaming of this article to Simon E. Dow House on the grounds "that it avoids disambiguation". That is not a valid criterion for renaming. The Crawford County Conservation Board, which has owned it since 1970 and had it listed in 1970 as Dow House, calls it Dow House. (See ref 2 in article). The name should be returned to Dow House {Dow City, Iowa). clariosophic (talk) 03:42, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, why was the HABS external link deleted? This is certainly a proper link and is germane to the article. clariosophic (talk) 03:49, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think naming it Simon E. Dow House or Simeon E. Dow House is not good, because there is uncertainty as to what is the correct name used by anyone. Probably in general and even more so in this specific house, going with the owners' preferences is best (with addition of (City, State) disambiguation).
About the HABS link, i also don't understand why it was deleted. Clariosophic's addition of a fact supported by a new footnote to the HABS source is fine, too, but the footnote formatting should be tailored somewhat differently than the HABS external link (the footnote should emphasize date and author-type stuff and probably should not go on about the photographs). There's role / need for both a footnote and a HABS external link, as are present in many (perhaps hundreds) of other articles. doncram (talk) 17:46, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
