ΛLVVΛLDVS or ALVVALDVS ?

[edit]

In a comment by Ian Richardson (?) to the British Museum blog the name Alwaldus is written as "ΛLVVΛLDVS" with a Greek letter Lambda representing the barless A in the original coin inscription. I reckon that a barless A is still an 'A', and not a Greek letter, and that it is a bad idea to use lookalike letters from Greek and other scripts to represent epigraphic variants of Latin letters. So, in spite of the reliable source for this multi-script spelling, I think that here on Wikipedia we ought to spell the name correctly using all Latin letters. As of writing I get one Google hit for "ΛLVVΛLDVS" (this Wikipedia article!) and 8 Google hits for "ALVVALDVS". "ALVVALDVS" is currently more common, and people searching for "ALVVALDVS" do not hit this page because the name is spelled graphically in mixed script letters rather than logically. I therefore suggest spelling the names as "ALVVALDVS". BabelStone (talk) 18:34, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree entirely. Go for it. Prioryman (talk) 18:51, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The name is normally spelt Alwaldus in modern usage as at http://www.biab.ac.uk/contents/32908, in the press release from the BM at http://finds.org.uk/news/stories/article/id/226 and in press reports of the Silverdale Hoard. It gets 205 hits on Google. I can see the logic of having the name as Alwaldus, which is why I added it in brackets, as that is what people will search on. ALVVALDVS is shown as a variant spelling of Æthelwald in PASE, but it seems to me a half translation to the modern spelling, with a double V instead of a W and the old V for U, which very few people would search on. I couldn't find the entry for ALVVALDVS in PASE, but it is standard practice in epigraphic and numismatic transcriptions to transcribe V's as they are rather than modernising, whereas transcribing A's as lambdas is not so common. At any rate, I agree with you that the correct solution is to give the modernised form Alwaldus in brackets after the transcription "ALVVALDVS". Photographs: more/better needed

[edit]

I've added some photos I took on a recent visit to Jorvik Viking Centre but would be delighted to see them replaced by better photographs: is any serious photographer visiting York in the next year while it's on display there? PamD 08:42, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
