First, I will acknowledge that the leading dependent clause is a perfectly valid grammatical form. However, they are a pet peeve of mine.
Given my prejudices, the leading dependent clause in the second sentence of your first paragraph is a particularly long example of the form... ;) dafydd 23:31, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Effective mass: I think that Shubnikov-De Haas effect allows to measure directly the cyclotron mass. The effective mass can be derived indirectly and under hypothesis. --EMajor (talk) 12:18, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

If you look at that, what's directly measured is the cyclotron frequency. From this you can calculate effective mass. If you think it would be more accurate, we could edit the article to say "determine the effective mass" rather than "measure the effective mass."
