Derogatory terms are e.g. used in USA e.g. "Niger". It comes from Latin that signifies black. It is derogatory because African-Americans never called themselves blacks. Color of skin was not their nationality, nor determination. It was derogatory because all their identity was ridiculed.

Saying that term Shiptar is derogatory, is utter nonsense. If people call themselves, as it has been stated even here, through history Shqiptar or Shqip(ë)tar then translation to Shiptar is merely language adjustment of their name to sound and tune of Slavic languages. Similarly like Espania becomes Spanija, or even better me(h)icans become me(ks)ikans.

Derogatory idea of term comes from general bad sentiment between Slavic people and Albanian people and has nothing to do with wording. Term Albanian or Shiptar causes equally bad sentiments related to Albanians among Slavs (who have such a sentiment). Similar is with some Greeks and Italians. So if Shiptar is derogatory then Albanian can be considered same way.

Thus comparing this with "Niger" term is utter nonsense. Someone can point why in Slavic languages country is then not called Shiptaria, but Albania. The only logic can be found in difference between e.g. Capital city of Austria that is in Slavic languages called Bec not Vienna yet Austria is name of country. Sometimes there are inconsistencies as this one in case of city and country, and sometimes related to name of nation and name of country. E.g in other languages Dutch and Netherlands/Holland. Shiptaria simply did not find its way in a language.

As far as your references among Serbs, those are all articles written by simple journalists stating their private opinion.

If people would not take some words as derogatory, those who are using them with such an intention would soon lose their interest of doing it.

Instead of resolving and canceling stupidity, writing this "Derogatory" story you are just feeding it!

Shiptar was never derogatory word, because of its meaning. It is MERELY original word taken from its own people adjusted to phonetics of their neighbors. Bad sentiments want be cured or changed by playing with words. Especially like those! Because people do not hate each other because of the words. There is probably something more relevant

This article shouldn't exist because this is English encyclopedia and not Albanian or Serbian. So why don't you just remove this because this article already exists and it's Albanians — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.99.251.13 (talk) 19:21, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

I deleted the references of the usage of the term as derogatory as three of them were dead links and another one was a comment on a news site called Blic. Please notice that I did not delete the original sentence and thus I call upon anyone and everyone to pitch in and properly cite the section. I entered some references regarding the use in south slavic languages. They had already been there. I also removed the unreferenced section. I suggest that some of these theories who are outdated, but also unsourced should not be there. Like for example the one who makes a connection whith a drivastine family in the middle ages, who was not albanian and has nothing to do with albanians, or the theory about the name originating from some people in the 5 century meanwhile as its stated here the albanians start using the term in the 17 century.
