Shin Hye-sun → Shin Hae-sun – With the continuing rise in popularity of actress <Shin Hae-sun>, the spelling of her English name has been up for debate for quite some time.

Since her debut in School 2013, many have spelled her name as <Shin Hye-sun>; others have spelled it as <Shin Hae-sun> (a difference in Hye or Hae). In recent years, many have pointed out that her own signature and places like her agency (YNK Entertainment under IOK Company) spelled her name with Hae, yet, many sources continued to spell it as Hye since it was the most common spelling since her debut (Hye is also a common spelling amongst other Korean celebrities like Park Shin-hye and Kim Hye-yoon, adding to its credibility at the time). Here are some other reliable sources that correctly spells her name with Hae: KoBiz, The Korean Herald, Korea JoongAng Daily, and The Korea Times.

It was only until last year that the actress added her English name to her Instagram account, spelling it herself as Hae. But due to the immense commonality of Hye across the internet, there wasn't a big change in how articles/sources/new fans spelled her name. As such, I am proposing that we change the spelling of her name to Hae, rather than Hye, as to fix the misinformation that is still at large. Comment WP:COMMONNAME, it's not technically Wikipedia's job to influence how people spell names. We're just supposed to reflect what is currently popularly done. If you can prove that the new spelling is currently more popular (you've already proven it's official, but commonness often takes priority over officialness), then I can vote to move. Note that I bolded "currently" intentionally; what was common in the past doesn't matter, per COMMONNAME; if the majority of recent sources use the new spelling then we can change this article's title to match that. I searched recent news articles and regarding commonness, Hye is still more common than Hae, sadly. While the new spelling is slowly catching on (especially with Korean news articles), I guess it'll take a few more years or so before it overtakes the incorrect spelling since Hye is such a common spelling in many Korean words.

Personally, I think that many of these non-Korean news articles/sites are spelling it as Hye because of popular websites like Wiki or IMDb that spells it as such. Oppose as the current titling (Shin Hye-sun) is the WP:COMMONNAME. A WP:BEFORE (yes, this policies is talking about AfD but regardless carries the same meaning intended) search on Google and Bing (the two most used search engines) returns over 760 thousands results with search term of "Shin Hye-sun" while only 168 thousands results with search term of "Shin Hae-sun", and this is before minusing away any form of WP:NOTRELIABLE sources (for example WP:QUESTIONABLE sources and/or WP:RSSELF sources, etc), and also the unreliable sources listed on WP:KO/RS#UR and WP:RSPSS. A reminder, as stated on the WP:RM, it's okay to disagree to the replier's comments hence there is no need to debate with the replier to change their mind. — Paper9oll (🔔 • 📝) 06:54, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
