IATA Code
[edit]You get more hits for SZD than for SZE and the first link in both searches leads to the official site. But SZE appears in the link to the orricial site. Anybody know which is the correct one? CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 12:16, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
- SZD is the correct code, it appears on the IATA website publication here. (page 59). Dbertman 12:28, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. Strange the SZE link. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 13:18, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
Where is the evidence to support the statement that Sheffield did not bother building an airport "due to the relative speed and reliability of its rail link with London at that time" ?
Leaving aside the fact that most people would probably want to travel to places other than London, the fact is that Sheffield`s rail links to London (by the late 60s) were not that fast.
Sheffield only held a relative advantage in speed to London for a short period, after the introduction of diesel traction on the ex Midland line to St Pancras, and before the completion of the WCML electrification in 1965/66. Even during this supposed golden era the service to London from Doncaster was faster (by about 10 minutes) than from Sheffield. Once the WCML was electrified (which any planner would know was due for completion) even Manchester and Liverpool were about 10 minutes faster to London, despite being further away !
I have the timetables for both 1965 and 1970 (for both the Eastern and London Midland regions of BR) if anyone requires confirmation of the previously quoted facts.
I propose to remove the comment about Sheffield`s superior rail links to London unless evidence to the contrary can be provided.

- The source was Batty, Rail Centres: Sheffield, quoting from memory. In the light of the evidence you provide it does seem a strange assertion, however it can be referenced!BaseTurnComplete (talk) 20:48, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
