Contested deletion
[edit]This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because it describes an empirical law in the field of neural engineering which is colloquially referred to as "Shannon criteria" or "Shannon model"[1], [2] (by the name of the author of the article that described this law [3]). This law relates charge per phase (Q, uC/cm2/phase), charge density per phase (D, uC/phase) and the dimensionless parameter k.
Log(D) = k - log(Q)
In the experiments performed in cat's cortex, it was found that if the parameters of electrical stimulation (electrode area, current magnitude and pulse width) are in the range of k > 1.5, the damage to the adjacent tissue region was observed. Currently, this empirical law is widely used to evaluate safe levels of the electrical stimulation. This law is applied in such areas as deep brain stimulation[4], cochlear stimulation, retinal implants, spinal cord stimulation[5] and peripheral nerves stimulation --Ejester (talk) 01:13, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

- Please provide some sources that have been written about the criteria but not by Shannon himself. The article cannot stand on a primary source alone. Further, you need to show that the criteria are consistently called the Shannon Criteria by others in the field. —C.Fred (talk) 01:17, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Also, if it's widely applied, why is a Google search for "shannon criteria" not returning any useful hits? —C.Fred (talk) 01:24, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
Sometimes it is refered to as "Shannon model". Google search "Shannon model" + "electrical stimulation" returns relevant content.
