- (in Gujarati: શાહ) is also a surname common among some people from India, especially from the state of Gujarat and the city of Bombay. It indicates the person or his previous generations were involved in trade and money lending and were either elite merchants or businessmen. Due to the wide geographical spread of the Gujarati people, there is an interesting joke going around that, it is impossible for a telephone directory of any city to be complete without Shah being a part of it. Incidently the 'Shah' surname runs into 100's of pages in the Mumbai Telephone Directory, and probably making it the longest.
