Edit to the definition of Sexual Repression
[edit]I reverted the last edits; they seemed hastily made and contained spelling and grammatical errors. Also I objected to this statement: "Sexual repression is a term used a viewpoint disagreeing with sexual behavioral norms to characterize such norms in negative terms. Use of the term "sexual repression" is often associated with claims that sexual norms induce feelings of guilt or shame associated with sexual impulses."
I recognize the need to be NPOV here, but I think this statement could be seen as potentially more POV than what we had before. This statement seems to suggest that the term "sexual repression" is only used in the context of people trying to oppose a certain kind of behavioral norm. I do not see any evidence that this is the case--nor do I think that the use of the term "sexual repression" necessarily involves disagreeing with sexual behavioral norms. Sexual repression refers to the lack of expression of sexuality, not the violation of social norms. People who talk about sexual repression are talking more about peoples' desires and feelings, rather than the acts that they engage in. Also, one can talk about sexual repression even in the context of agreeing with various sexual norms. The book cited in the first paragraph is actually an example of how people can discuss sexual repression in a context that does not call into question all sexual norms and indeed reinforces many of them. If you doubt this, read the book! Cazort (talk) 23:21, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Also, I would welcome discussion or inclusion of statement about the relation between the usage of the term sexual repression and viewpoints on sexual norms, but I think that such a statement would require some sort of citation! Disambiguation
[edit]What do you think of the idea of making sexual repression direct to this page and then have a "for the use of the term in biology see sexual repression (biology)? As much as I love biology, this page seems to be a topic of much greater general interest. Cazort (talk) 18:20, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
I just made this change. Cazort (talk) 00:25, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
I don't know what this article was like in 2008, but in 2012 it seems rather bland and lacking in any serious information. Someone needs to redo this article.Mylittlezach (talk) 01:26, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Catholic priesthood
[edit]Critics of the Catholic priesthood, esepcially in feminist and LGBT circles, have often described the institution as comprised of men who are sexually repressed. The article should maybe contain additional information on this issue. ADM (talk) 14:06, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Who is Bernard Apfelbaum?
[edit]This person features prominently in this article, after some admittedly perfunctory digging he appears to have limited academic credence. It seems his doctorate was squired through the American Psychological Association, which, to be blunt, is an institution that is regarded as a sausage factory for doctorates. I'm not touching this because it doesn't smell right but if anyone would like to edit this article so it reflects opinion from the broader academic world, you might start by deleting this reference, just a suggestion, good luck. This articles needs to be objective
[edit]This articles needs to be objective. At it's current point it seems to assume Sexual Repression is a truth. It needs a proper philosophical definition of sexual repression, and information giving both sides of the question: Are we repressed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cking1130 (talk • contribs) 07:11, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
