Michigan

[edit]

Michigan is included in the list of seaside resorts. While it clearly has a shoreline at a lake, it is nowhere close to the sea. I am fine including it if the purpose of this article is to include resorts near any body of water. However, if this is only for resorts on the ocean, the Michigan resort towns should go. Thanks, 72Dino (talk) 23:12, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It has been a few weeks, so I am removing those resorts that are not by the sea (i.e., they are by a lake). 72Dino (talk) 15:59, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

removal of apparent OR

[edit]

I've removed the section on "Seasidedness" which appears to be a mishmash of OR and SYNTH created from mostly dubious sources. Valereee (talk) 14:55, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Seaside resort

[edit]

Should city also be added along with town village and hotel on this page? There are many seaside resort cities. 78.86.129.94 (talk) 18:46, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It is true that Brighton and Hove, for example, is a city. But there would need to be a clear consensus on this talk page that city should be added and other editors in favour of the inclusion as this content has previously been reverted in June 2023 and April 2023. 78, what is it that you're trying to fix? That is, how does this help readers? Valereee (talk) 20:54, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looking on the page around the world there are many cities listed on this site, Ostend, Nesebar, kovalam,Livorno,Minturno just to mention a few are all seaside resort cities. 78.86.133.37 (talk) 14:35, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, I'm not following. Can you give a specific example of a change are you hoping to make? Valereee (talk) 15:12, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A seaside resort is a town, village, or hotel that serves as a vacation resort. to be changed to A seaside resort is a city, town, village, or hotel that serves as a vacation resort 78.86.133.37 (talk) 15:15, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, got it, thanks. It sounds like the addition has been made before and reverted, so you'll need to get others on board. The way to do that is to persuade other editors here to understanding why you think it's a good idea/necessary/helpful to readers, and if people are objecting, you'd need to find someone somewhere in a reliable source saying the equivalent of "a seaside resort is a city, town, village, or hotel that serves as a vacation resort". It doesn't have to be those exact words, but it needs to communicate basically that idea.
@Kind Tennis Fan, just for the sake of my laziness, do you recall whether those reversions were accompanied by an edit summary that explained the objection? Valereee (talk) 15:25, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thank you, if you click the link Resort town it does state: A resort town, resort city or resort destination, is an urban area where tourism or vacationing is the primary component of the local culture and economy. Would that be good enough? 78.86.133.37 (talk) 15:32, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So, this is kind of a big leap into Wikipedia policy for you to deal with for what I'm sure seems to you like a very small change, but I'll get into it if you will.
We never cite to Wikipedia. That probably seems strange. We cite to reliable sources, and Wikipedia is not considered sufficient for that. Wikipedia is basically a curated collection of sources about a subject (the references in an article are those sources), along with text explaining what those sources say (the article itself is that text.) So just because the article Resort town says a resort town can be a city doesn't necessarily mean we can generalize that means a seaside resort can be a city.
Let's instead see if we can figure out why others would be objecting to this, because it really doesn't seem like a problem to me, and it's obvious there are seaside resort cities. Getting responses can take a while here, so you might try back tomorrow to see if KTF has responded to my ping. They haven't edited in 16 hours, so it can sometimes take a while. In the meantime I'll try to track down those two reverts myself if I get a chance.
Also, consider making an account. It's fast, free, and makes it much easier for other editors to communicate with you. Valereee (talk) 16:12, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you :) 78.86.133.37 (talk) 16:18, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the diff from June. No edit summary, but it looks to me like we were linking to resort town twice, once to city, once to town, which is silly. So I'm not sure that was an objection to the content, could have been just an objection to the silliness.
Here's the diff from April, again a reversion of silliness (linking to city status in the UK is just puzzling) with no edit summary by the same editor. Again I read it as an objection to the silliness rather than the addition of the word city. Valereee (talk) 16:30, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ok, thank you for your work. 78.86.133.37 (talk) 16:37, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

City

[edit]

Does anyone feel like the "city" thing is looking like sock/meating? I have no objection to the addition, but seriously. Valereee (talk) 21:42, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
