Irish

[edit]

Hughes was born in London, but spent much of his youth in Firhouse, Dublin. how long? does he have a british passport? irish? dual nationality? --Cameron Scott (talk) 17:37, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hughes referred to Ireland as his 'homeland' in his book 'The Grey Area' - I think it is safe to say he is Irish. Would we refer to Keifer Sutherland as British just because he too was born in London? --Skookumuk (talk) 22:37, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Date of death

[edit]

Is there a source to say Hughes died on Oct 11? Of the three sources quoted, the IB Times report contains no date and the reports from the BBC and the Guardian both say he died on Monday "this AM" (the 16th) OZOO (t) (c) 15:24, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Who or what has suggested the 11th? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:38, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
IP 92.40.249.191 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) has been editing the article to say 11. May just be disruption, thought I'd check before reverting. OZOO (t) (c) 15:43, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The IP's edit summaries offer The Guardian. But there is no suggestion of 11th there, as far as I can see. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:51, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Poem

[edit]

Under the circumstances, the day after his death, the poem, first published in his first book in 1993, is full of pathos and irony. I'd be very happy to a link to that article in The Guardian. But I really don't think it's appropriate to include the entire poem, as per WP:WEIGHT. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:14, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I agree - a couple of choice lines would suffice. Though when I read it earlier I couldn't help saying 'I didn't know him, but cheers!' out loud. JezGrove (talk) 19:26, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's funny and also now very sad. But I think Wikipedia is best completely avoiding this kind of topical editorialising. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:35, 17 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have edited this. It's a copyright violation, and when not mentioned in context it looks like indiscriminate information "Man wrote a poem about death and what would you know, 20 years later he died". Anarcho-authoritarian (talk) 17:14, 18 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Early life

[edit]

The first paragraph of the Early Life sections confused & has a bunch of contradictions. - Sitush (talk) 16:00, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
