IMO, everything currently in the "In popular culture" section is trivia and has been removed. The list has been posted here, in the event that anyone wishes to expand these trivial notes into actual notable tidbits-TinGrin 17:49, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Apart from the stickers, scratch and sniff surfaces are to be found on some objects in popular culture: One of the first books about Apple computers (VANLOVES Apple Software Guide Series / R.Love & J.Vandiver-1981) had the scent of an apple printed on the inside the cover. It was a novel for a new computer named APPLE... but todays' scratch and sniff technology allows the author to create a more "integral" reading experience. Sniff clues can be embedded through out the storyline.

Today's technology can last much longer and have a scent for many years and has more than 1400 offerings of fragrances. Today's resurgence of new SMELL technology has brought a renewed interest in creating multi-sensory reading experiences in books. i.e. Scratch and Sniff Around the Lake ( scratchandsniffpublishing.com), Scratch and Sniff with Marcel Proust (scratchandsniffproust.com), Sniffing on the Farm, Scentsational Spices and Herbs and many other books use scents as part of the story or intrigue for the reader. Marcel Proust believed smell had a direct relationship with emotion. From children's books (Jasper Jenkins Series) to cookbooks and greeting cards, smell has become another way to enhance the reading experience by integrating fragrances into the book. Mystery books, thriller books, crime stories ( Mel Figoni-The Vine Drips Blood, 2015) and other novels (NXTGENinteractive.com) use scent as part of the clues to the storyline.

  • The vinyl cover of the Lemonheads album 'VARSHONS' features a lemon scented scratch and sniff in the center.
  • Gran Turismo 2 and FIFA 2001 featured a scratch and sniff disc.
  • The vinyl cover of Dandelion Gum, an album by Black Moth Super Rainbow, has a scratch and sniff surface.
  • The County Medical Examiners' album "Olidous Operettas" is a scratch and sniff surface that smells like rotting meat.
  • The Player's Guide for the 1995 Super Nintendo video game EarthBound includes six scratch and sniff cards. One contained a mystery scent; if the player guessed the smell and sent in the card to Nintendo, they would receive a prize. The scent turned out to be Pizza.
  • Also an episode of the sci-fi series Farscape was called Scratch 'n Sniff.

Cold War

[edit]

"Samples of scratch and sniff stickers are used for detection of individual anosmia, although this practice declined after the end of the Cold War." What does Anosmia or Scratch and Sniff stickers have to do with the cold war? You might as well say the practices declined after Mr. Belvedere was canceled. 173.59.124.161 (talk) 16:58, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

There seems to be an influx of vandalism to this article due to a Tiktok trend or something. People have been adding references to Hitler as the inventor of this technology. Obviously this is not true. Just putting this here as a point of reference if anything slips through. Hitler did NOT invent this! DrAaronStein (talk) 08:11, 4 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
