Tonnage

[edit]

I changed Scarborough's tonnage in the article and wanted to explain my reasoning. There's three principal sources:

  • the Register of Transports 1774-94, produced by Admiralty and recording 411 tons;
  • a contemporaneous Admiralty survey recording 418 36/94 tons b.o.m.; and
  • Observations in Phullip Gidley King RN, aboard the Fleet, recording 430 tons.

I have referenced all three measurements in a footnote, but included the Register as the primary. This is principally because Bateson, an accepted expert on these vessels, contrats all thrre estimates and concludes: "The most accurate figures probably are those given in the "Register of Transports 1774-1794"" (Convict Ships 1969, p.96). Realistically, any of the figures could have been correct given the poor state of records, but Bateson seems a reliable source for picking this one over the others.

Happy to discuss as always if there are differing sources or views. Euryalus (talk) 00:12, 14 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

For anyone who's interested, this article is being discussed at Scarborough Shoal. All input welcomed. -LookingYourBest (talk) 10:18, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
